LUTE OTIS COTTLE, OF CEDAR RAPIDS, IOW'A.
IMPROVEMENT IN BAGGAGE`CHECKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 134,257, dated December 24, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LUTE O. COTTLE, of Cedar Rapids, Linn county, and State of Iowa, have invented a new and valuable Improvef ment in my Baggage-Check, of which the following is a speciiication: p
My invention relates to a check having a numbered disk which may be rotated so that any number representing a station or destination may be brought into position so as to be exposed through an inspection-orifice. It is formed of a piece of metal properly shaped,
and bent upon itself so as to form two plates, A and B, between which is fixed, on an axis, a movable disk, G, marked on Iopposite sides with numbers or other characters ran ging from one upward. This movable disk G is perforated with holes D through its face, or is scalloped on its periphery. Asrn all pin, g, is fixed in the back plate B in proper position, and protrudes inward so as to engage the perfo- .rations D in the disk, or in notches on the periphery of the same, as may be preferred, to hold the disk xedly when it is set to expose the proper number. The center pin or pivot C presses through plate A and disk G, and is secured iirmly to the back plate B. It projects beyond the face of plate A, and has a head which forms a shoulder which limits the play of plate A. Said pin is used as a thumblever to separate the plates and relieve the movable disk when it is to be revolved.
Description of Drawing.
Figure l `is a front view, and Fig. 2 a sec'- tion, of my device. Fig. 3 shows one face of the disk; Fig. 4, the opposite face thereof. Figs. 5 and 6 show the notched or scalloped disk.
Similar reference letters represent corresponding parts in the figures.
A sheet of metal eut to proper shape is bent at H to form said plates A and B. A pin, C,
which has a shoulder or head forming a bearing against the plate A, through which it passes, is riveted securely to the plate B, and this serves as a stop to limit the moving of the plates as they are pressed apart to disen gage the disk G, which revolves upon the pin as an axis. This disk G is stamped or engraved with a system of numbers from one upward on both its faces. It has a scalloped edge, each notch being opposite one of vthe respective numbers on the disk, which notch is entered by a pin ixed in the plate as the disk is moved to the right or left to show the required number through the hole E in the front plate. The plates A and B are provided with slots ff out on the top and bottom to serve as holes for the straps which attach the check to the baggage.
My check is handled in the following manner: When a certain number is to be exposed through the hole E the plates are sprung apart by pressing against the pin C until the disk is liberated and revolves easily; it is then rotated until the required number in the disk appears through the hole E, whenthe plates are released and the notch or perforation engages with the pin, which holds it inits proper place. The notches on the edge of the disk are in preference t o the perforations, as they enable the check to be held easier in the hand While bcing revolved.
Claim.
What I claim as new. and my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The plate or holder bent upon itselfl so as to inclose the indicator-disk, which rotates on a pivot projecting from one arm of the plate and through an opening in the other, and operates as a lever to separate the plates A and B and release the retaining device, substantially as set forth and described.`
