Description

Mcmefrow :maozE's Mmmm/Ew COTTON HALE '/I'IIE MARKEM).
No. 121,756. Patented Dec.12,1s71
UNITED STATES MARION N. COE, OF MADISON PARISH, LOUISIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN DEVICES FOR MAKING BALE-TIES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 121,756, dated December 12, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARION N. COE, of the parish of Madison and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and useful Implement for Marking Cotton-Bale Ties, consisting of metal bands bound around thc bale; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this speciticaticn, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 is a plan ofthe same; Fig. 3, a front elevation of the stock; Fig. 4, aplah of typeholder; Fig. 5, a plan of type.
A indicates a spring; B, a handle. O is a pointed tongue, dart-shaped, and beveled on the lower side, as shown, so as to be easily forced under the band, having a shoulder at I), which serves as a gauge or stop. The upper surface of this tongue is liat, and it must be thick enough in that part which comes under the stamp to sustain the shock of a sharp blow upon the stock G. G, a stock, secured to the end ot' arm E by thumb-screw H; said stock has a dovetailed chamber at its lower end to receive a plate, I 5 this plate has a long narrow hole through its thinnest way to receive types or blocks J. These l blocks, containing letters, figures, ciphers, or characters, are separate, so as to admit ot` being taken out and replaced when they become worn, or whenever desired to change the name or igures.
In practice the handle of stamp is taken in the hand and the dart-shaped point forced under the ties which extend around the bales; when the stock containing the stamp, which is always raised by a spring when not in use, is depressed with sutticient force to print the characters permanently upon the tie.
When stamped in this manner the marks cannot be ei'iectually erased, and thereby prevents the probability of the loss of bales by either stealing or wrong shipment.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the handle B, hinged arm E, stock G for holding the type-block, sprin g A, and the beveled and dart-shaped tongue O, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as described.
