Description

JOI-IN ROYER, OF HARTVILLE, OHIO.
BED.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 25, 1920.
Application led April 2, 1919. Serial No. 286,911.
T o all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN ROYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hartville, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Bed, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to beds and has more especial reference to beds designed for the use of invalids or for hospital use and arranged to be tilted laterally to allow a patient to be easily moved upon the side.
The obj eet of the invention is to provide a bed which may be easily and readily tilted to either side.
A further object is to provide a bed which may be tilted with means for holding it in the tilted position.
A still further object is to provide a bed of this character which is simple and inexpensive to manufacture and eilicient in operation.
With these objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts, hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanyingr drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportions, size and minor details of construction may be made within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit or sacrifieing any of the advantages of the invention. i
The invention thus set forth in general terms is illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, in Which Figure l is a perspective view of a bed embodying my invention showing the same in the tilted position; and
Fig. 2, a fragmentary view of` a portion of the head board and the base upon which it is mounted, parts being broken away for the purpose of illustration.
A practical embodiment of the invention is disclosed in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification in which similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.'
The bed comprises the head board 1 and the food board 2, the general construction of both being the same, the usual side rails 3 of any approved construction being provided for connecting the head board and foot board.
The head board l and the foot board 2 are each provided with a rocker 4l which rests upon, the horizontal" ledge 5 of a base p0rtion, a plurality o'll spaced pins or studs 7 being provided upon the ledge 5 and arranged to be received within the sockets 8 formed in the under side of the rocker 1l. One of these studs is always in engagement with the corresponding socket in the rocker thus preventing any lateral movement of the bed with relation to the base portion 6.
For the purposeof holding the bed in any desired position a pair of oppositely disposed curved rack bars 9 are pivotally mounted, as shown at 10, near opposite ends of the base member 6 at the foot of the bed. Each of these rack bars is provided on its inner face with a plurality of ratchet teeth l1 arranged to engage the pins 12 which are provided upon the outer side of the foot board.
In order to limit the tilting movement to either side an arm 13 is pivotally mounted at eachV side of the foot board as shown at 14 and arranged to contact with the floor as shown in Fig. l when the bed has reached the limit of its movement to either side.
In order to prevent the bed from tilting suddenly to either side an arm l5 is pivot ally mounted to each side rail as shown at 16 and provided with a cap 17 of rubber or similar material adapted to rest upon the floor. .Each of these arms is located at an angle to the side rail to which it is attached and arranged to creep along the floor as the bed is tilted in either direction.
Although the drawings and above specification disclose the best mode in which I have contemplated embodying my invention I desire to be not limited to the details of such disclosure, for, in the further practical application of my invention, many changes in form and construction may be made, as circumstances require or experience suggests, without departing from the spirit of the invention, within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim r- 1. A bed comprising a head board, a foot board and side rails, rockers upon the head and foot board, base members upon which the rockers rest, rack bars pivotally mounted upon one base member and pins mounted upon the foot board for engagement with the rack bars, studs mounted upon the base portions and sockets in the under sides of the rockers for engagement with said studs,
and foot board, base members upon which 15 the rockers rest, rack bars pivotally mounted upon one base membe and pinel mounted upon the foot board for engagement with the rack bars7 studs mounted upon the base portions and sockets in the under sides of the rockers for engagement with said studs, downwardly depending' stop arms pivotally lsuspended upon the foot board and nrms pivotally connected to the side ails and engaging the Hoor.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name.
JOHN ROYER.
