UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM KAYLOR, OF MUSKOGEE, OKLAHOMA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO J. L. KIMMEL, 0F MUSKOGEE, OKLAHOMA.
ONE-PIECE RATCHET-WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 25, 1920.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM KAYLOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at 1116 Houston street, Muskogee, in the county of Muskogee and State of Oklahoma, have mvented a new and useful One-Piece Ratchet- Wrench, of which the following is a specifioation.
My invention relates. to improvements 1n open end wrenches and itsobgect 1s to provide an extremely simple an inexpenslve, yet a highly eflicient and reliable wrench which may be constructed of one piece of metal and at the same time operate as a ratchet wrench, being capable of turning a nut on one stroke and turning freely on said nut during its return movement.
With the foregoing in view, the inventlon resides in the specific construction of the wrench hereinafter described and claimed, the descriptive matter being supplemented by the accompanying drawing. I
Figure 1 illustrates a side elevation of a wrench constructed in accordance with my invention, showing its relation with a nut on its working stroke.
Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 illustrating the manner in .which the wrench releases the nut on its return strokes.
In constructing the wrench, the usual shank or handle 1 is provided on one or both ends with a head 2. Two of these heads are shown but since the constructions of both are the same, only one will be described.
A nut receiving notch 3 is formed in the head 2 and is provided with a substantially central flat face 4 for contact with one facet of a hexagonal nut such as The portions of the head at opposite ends of the face 4, form two jaws 6 and 7 which I have termed a leadin jaw and a following jaw respectively, 811108 the former moves ahead of the latter during the working strokes of the wrench. The following jaw 7 is provided with a flat inner face 8 for contact with another facet of the nut 5, with a short face 9 to blnda ainst the next facet, and with a rounded ront end 10 which merges into said short face 9. The leading jaw 6 is provided with a flat with one facet of the nut, and with a flat outer face 12 disposed at an obtuse angle to said face 11, said angle being greater than that existing between two adjacent facets of the nut. This angular relation permlts the wrench, on its return strokes, to rock freely upon the rounded jaw end 10 as a fulcrum, (see Fig. 2). By rocking the wrench in this manner and at the same time holding it against the nut, it will take another hold of the latter, thus allowing the device to be used in the same manner as a ratchet wrench, which produces a great saving in time over the ordinary open end wrench which must be alternately removed from and applied to the nut.
claim:
An open end wrench comprising a head having a nut receiving notch provided with a substantially central flat face for contact with one facet of a hexagonal nut, the portions of the head at opposite ends of said face forming a leading jaw and a following jaw; said following jaw having an inner fiat face for contact with another facet of the nut, a short outer face to bind against the next facet of the nut, and a rounded front end mer ing into said short face and providing a ful crum upon which the wrench rocks on its return strokes; said leading jaw having an inner fiat face to contact with the nut facet opposite said short face, and an outer flat face at an angle to said inner face greater than the angle between two nut facets, permitting rocking of the wrench upon the aforesaid fulcrum.
WILLIAM KAYLOR.
