To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that l, JOHN Ami-imi Kava, a subject of theKing of'. Great Britain, residing at Sault Ste. Marie, Province ol!V Ontario, Dominion of Canada, have Vinvented a new and useful Bottle-Cap; and .l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to a bottle cap, and has for its object to provide a device of this character which embodies novel .features of construction -whereby it can be used repeatedly and can be placed in position or removed therefrom without the use of any special tools.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a device of this character which is comparatively simple and inexpensive in its construction, which will tightly seal the mouth of' the bottle when in position thereon, which is not liable to become accidentally removed in handling the bottle, and which can be easily manipulated with the hands.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel combinations and arrangements of the parts as will more fully appear as the description p roceeds, the novel features thereof being pointed out in the appended claim.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a bottle neck which is provided with a cap constructed in accordance with the invention.

Referring to the drawings, which illustrate one embodiment oi the invention, the numeral l designates the neck of a bottle which is provided at a point adjacent the end thereof with an exterior annular rib 2, said rib being utilized in securing the cap in position upon the bottle. The cap 3 is Jformed of sheet metal and has side flanges 4 of a suitable length to extend downwardly along the sides of the bottle neck and reach beyond the rib 2. The cap is preferably formed of: spring metal so that it will spring back into shape after being bent, and the top of them cap is lined with a pad 5 of cork or similar compressible material which engages the upper end of the bottle neck to seal the same when the cap is clamped in position thereon.
The depending side flange 4 of the cap is -provided at intervals with a series of outwardly projecting cam lugs 6, said lugs being shown as stamped outwardly from the material of which the cap is l'ormed. A. clamping ring 7 is rotatably mounted upon the flange 4 of the cap, being formed with cam grooves 8 which receive the lugs 6. The cam grooves Seach have a deep end and a shallow end, and the outer ends of the lugs 6 are rounded so as to slidably engage the cam walls of the grooves. When the locking ring 7 is rotated to bring the lugs 6 into the deep ends of the grooves 8, the flange 4of the cap assumes a substantially cylindrical shape, as indicated by Fig. 3, so that it can be fitted upon the bottle neck or removed therefrom. After the cap has been applied to the bottle neck, the locking ring 7 is rotated to bring the`lugs6 into the shallow ends of the cam grooves 8, thereby forcing the lugs and corresponding portions of the side flange 4 of the cap inwardly and drawing the flange into a locking engagement with the rib 2 of thebottle neck, as indicated by Fig. 4. The bottle cap is then locked in position upon the bottle neck, and the cork lining 5 drawn into a firm engagement with the bottle neck so as to effectively seal the same. As shown on the drawing, the deep ends of the cam grooves 8 in the locking rinor communicate with openings 9 extending downwardly through the lower edge of the locking. ring, said openings being of a sufficient size to receive the lugs 6 the openings 9.

Said detent may be formed of spring inaterial and seated in a recess ll in the periphery of the looking ring, one end of the detent being riveted or otherwise secured at l2 to the ring, while the other end thereof is formed with a nose 13 which extends through an opening in the ring` and is adapted to engage a notch le in one of the lugs G. Then the lockingring` is rotated into oper` ative position the nose 13 will automaticallx7 seat itself in the notch l-il vent backward or reverse movement of the looking ring. Accidental disengagement ot the cap :troni the bottle will thus be rendered an impossibility, although when it is desired to remove the cap it is inerely necessary to spring` the tree end of the detent l() outwardly and disengag'e the nose 13 Vthereof from the notch 14, preparatory to ro tatingv the ring and releasing the cap.
Having thus'described the invention, what and thereby pre-v l claim as new and desire to seem-e by Letters Patent, is1- A bottle cap inohuling` a sheet metal body formed with a flexible peripheral ilauge, a series of rounded lugs pro]l eoting lateral ly from the flange at a point adjacent the ilree edgev thereof, one oi" the said lugs havingY a uoteh therein, locking' ring' rotatably mounted upon the flange and 'lormed with am grooves which receive the lugs and coperate with the rounded ends thereo!e to flex the tlangg'e oi'V the Cap body iuwardlv when the locking ring is rotated. and a spring detent mounted upon the locking ring;- and formed with a nose extending through the locking` ring` and adapted to engage the bei'ore mentioned notch ol' one ol' the lugs lo hold the ring;` against backward rotation after it has been manipulated to lool; the cap in position.
