Description

A. TWAHGOWSKI.
HEEL.
APPLlcAmn mso Juv/2s. |919.
Patented May 25, 1920.
`PATENT OFFICE.
ALEXANDER TWARGOWSKI, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN;
HEEL.
Application led July 28, 1919.
To ZZ yli/wm, it may concern.'
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER Twanoeowslu, a citizen of the United States of America, residin at Detroit, in the county of l'Vayne and tate of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Heels, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to heels and has for one of its objects the provision of a construction which can be readily attached to a shoe and has a ground engaging portion which is adjustable to provide for wear. Another object of the invention is the provision of a hollow body member which is adapted to receive different kinds of ground engaging members. A further object is to provide a construction which is simple and comparatively cheap to manufacture. Other objects of the invention reside in the novel arrangements and combinations of parts as more fully hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of, a shoe showing a part of the structure embodying my invention;
Figs. 2 and 3 are perspective views showing other parts of the structure separated from each other;
Figs. s1 and 5 are cross sections at right angles to each other of the structure applied to a shoe;
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a modified construction of a ground engaging member.
1 is the shoe and 2 is a suitably shaped metallic plate secured to the heel portion of the bottom of the shoe by suitable securing means, such as the nails 3. This plate is provided with struck-out tongues 4. 5 is a hollow body member adapted to be secured to the plate 2. This hollow body member has an inner wall 6 which is'provided with the apertures 7 around its periphery and corresponding in position to the tongues 4, which tongues are adapted to engage in the apertures and to be clenched over the inner wall to clamp the hollow body member to the plate. The inner wall 6 has its rear portion 8 recessed, its forward portion 9 being stepped out so that the amount of material to be placed in the hollow body member will be decreased. The hollow body member has the side flanges 10 which are shaped to form the sides of the heel.
11 is a ground engaging member and com- Speciiication of Letters Patent.
Patented May 25, 1920.
Serial No. 313,814.
prisesA the flanged plate 12 having a contour correspondin to that of the inner wall 6 of the hollow botv y member. 13 is a yieldable member `formed of material, such as rubber, which is suitably secured to the plate 2 and has the lateral flanges 14 at its sides which extend below the bottom of the side flanges 10 of the hollow body member and have their outer faces substantially flush with the outer faces of the side flanges. The ground engaging member is secured to the hollow body member by suitable means, and as shown in the present instance, this means comprises the screw 15 extending through the yieldable member 13 and plate 12 and engaging the inner wall 6. Suitable means, such as the screw 16, is provided for readily withdrawing' the ground engaging member from the hollow body member.
lVIeans is provided for adjusting the ground engaging member outwardly relative to the hollow body member for the purpose of providing for wear upon the ground engaging member. As shown, this means comprises the sheets 1T which may be placed between the plate 12 and the inner wall 6.
Instead of having a vieldable groundengaging member it may be desired to have an anti-creeping member for preventing slipping. As shown in Fig. 6, 17 is an anti-creeping member comprising the metal plate 18 having suitable projections, such as struck-out tongues 19. adapted to engage in the surface over which the wearer of the shoe is moving and to prevent slipping. The periphery of this plate lies substantially flush with the faces of the side fianges of the hollow body member. Suitable fillers 20 and 21 are provided for filling in the space between the plate 1S and the inner wall 6 of the hollow body member.
From the above description it will be readily seen that I have provided a simple construction which can be cheaply manufactured and further, in which the ground-engaging' portion can be removed from the hollow body portion of one of a pair of shoes and inserted into the hollow body portion of the other shoe so that it will wear more evenly.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. In a shoe, a tread member comprising a plate secured to the bottom of the shoe body member having an apertured inner wall, said tongues engaging in the apertures and bein clenched over said Wall for securing said olloW body member to seid plate, und n membeiI in seid hollow body member' and extending beyond its outer ends.
2. In e shoe, o tread member comprising :i plete secured to the bottom of theehoe and having struck-out tongues, :i hollow body member having en epertnred inner wall, said tongues engaging in the apertures und being clenched over seid Wall forfseeuring seid hollow body member to'safd splate, and' mennsor spacing seid lost mentioned member from said inner Welll 8. In i heel for shoes, the combination with o plate secured to the bottom `of'tlle shoe and having struclvout tongues, of u hollow body member provided with anapew tured inner wal-l, and side flanges forming the sides of the heel, said inner `well having its rear portion recessed, and said tongues enga ring in the apertures in said wall and olenche'd over said wall for securing said hollow body member to said plate, a plate of corres onding contour to that of said inner waal and e yieldable member secured to said plete and extending' beyond the outer Vand of seid hollow body member, and means for securing said plate and yielduble memliollovv'fbddy-memberE to `seid plate, a "plate1 of corres ending Contour'fto that of said inner wail, la yieldehle'member secured to seid plate and extending beyond the onteiend oeaid hollow body-member, 4menne for securing said plete `and Vyreldeble member to seid inner `v'mi1fl,l\md means secured to Suid plate 'for withdrawing sei-d plate `,sind yield- :iblelmember-from'said hollow -body member.
In Vtetimon whereof: Inlfx my signature.
