To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, \VILLIAM H. SAYRE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Glen Ridge, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rabble-Blades, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to wear resistant materials, and it is particularly applicable treated in the furnace. Owing to the nature of the said material and process, the rabble blades are very short-lived, theirbodies, and particularly their sides, being quickly worn away by the abrading contact of the pieces of the material being treated. As a result of this wearing away of the rabble blades, the said material accumulates, and it is necessary to bar or separate the pieces thereof, during which process poisonous gases may be given off.
lVith these defects in vicw,objects of the invention are to" provide a rabble blade which shall be highly wear-resistant and which will be efficient and economical in construction and operatlon. These and other objects of the invention will in part be obvious and in part be more fully explained in the following description.
In the accompanying drawings, which are referred to herein and form part hereof, are
illustrated several embodiments of the invention,the same serving inconnection with the description herein to explain the principles of the invention and to set forth its advantages.

A rabble blade constructed in accordance with the invention comprises a body portion, and wear-resistant elements disposed in the side thereof so as to protect the said side face from wear, whileat the .same time not unduly weakening the said body.
In the preferred embodiment of the invention, the said wear-resistant elements are composed of hardmineral, as alundum, and are disposed in spaced-apart horizontal rows.
Referring in detail to thedrawings, there is illustrated in Fig. 2 an embodiment of the invention comprising a body 7 of .a rabrabble blade is secured at its upper portion 8 to a revolving arm of the machine by which it ismoved through the material being A common formof rabble blade is made of metal, cast iron, and it will readily be seen that because of the nature of the materials being treated and'of the process of treating the same, the wearon the rabble blade is very severe and the life of the blade consequently is very short.
To render the blade more wear-resistant andthus prolong its life, while at the same time avoiding the other consequent defects Preferably, these elements are composed of hard mineral substances, such as artificial corundum, known as alundum, andare made of suitable: proportions. "It will be" noted that these elements may be disposed throughout the body of the blade during the casting process, the material composing the elements being of such nature as not to be injuriously affected by the heat of the molten metal. Preferably, also, the elements will be of such size as to extend through the body of the blade and project on both sides.
It isdesirable,however, not to weaken the structure of the blade, and therefore in the best embodiment of the invention, the elements are disposed in the side faces of the Several 6X- blade suitably spaced apart. amples of this spacing apart of the elements are shown in the drawings; In Fig.

It will be seen that a rabble blade constructed in accordance with the invention 7 as heretofore described will carry out the acted on, such for'instance as paddle blades or mixing blades for use in pug .mills, or other forms of mixing' or agitating blades for acting on other materials.
The invention in its broader aspects is not limited to the precise construction or constructions shown and described, as many changes may be made in the details thereof Without departing from the main principles of the invention or sacrificing its chief ad vantages.
I claim? 1. A member for agitating or stirring material, said member having a body portion adapted to be moved through the material and agitate or stir the same, said body portion having wear-resistant elements disposed in the side face thereof, to protect the same from wear by the abrasion of the material thereon. - 2. A rabble blade adapted to be moved through material to agitate the same, and having wear-resistant elements disposed-in theside face thereof to prevent the blade from wear by the abrasion of the material thereon.
3. A member for agitating or stirring material, said member havinga metal blade portion adapted to be moved through the .material and agitate or stir the same, said blade portion having hard wear-resistant elements disposed in the side face thereof toprotect the blade from wear by the abrasion of the material thereon.
4. A member for agitating or stirring material, said member having a metal blade portion adapted tobe moved through the material and agitate or stir the same, said blade portion having alundum wear-resistant elements disposed in the'side face thereof to protect the metal fromwear by' th abrasion of the material thereon. l
