THOMAS M. PHILLIPS, OF YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-THIRD TO THE YOUNGS- TOWN STEEL COMPANY, OF YOUNGSTOWN OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO, AND ONE- THIRD TO EDWARD L. FORD, OF YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO.
MIXING-HIACHINE Original application filed May 18, 1908, Serial No. 433,437. Divided and this application filed December 29, 1908.
Patented April 20, 1909.
Serial No. 469,880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS M. PHILLIPS, of Youngstown, Mahoning county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Mixing-Machine, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of one form of my mixing machine; Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same with a drum rotated through an angle of approximately 90 degrees, and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the interior screen removed.
This application is a division from application Serial Number 433,437, filed May 18, 1908.
Myinvention has relation to mixing apparatus, and is designed to provide apparatus of novel and efficient character which has been more especially designed for use for the preliminary treatment of clay, in making a mixture of clay and water, to form a vehicle for blast furnace flue dust, whereby such.
dust can be returned to the furnace for use. The apparatus may, however, be used for a variety of other purposes.
The precise nature of my invention will be best understood by reference to accompanying drawings, which will now be described, it being premised; however, that various changes can be made in the details of construction and arrangement by those skilled in the art, Without departing from my invention as defined in the claim.
In the drawings the numeral 2 desi nates a drum or cylinder, which is mounted for rotation in suitable bearings 3. This cylinder is provided at one side with a filling opening having a removable close fitting cover 4. It is also provided with interior longitudinal conveyors 5 secured to the inside walls of the drum 2, and a longitudinally extending screen 6, preferably of wire mesh; which divides the interior of the cylinder into two compartments, into one of which the opening above referred to leads.
7 are the trunnions of the cylinder which are mounted in the bearings 3. One or both of the trunnions are made hollow for admission of steam from a suitable supply pipe 8. In the drawings I have shown the steam as admitted through one-only of the trunnions. The cylinder may be rotated in any suitable manner not shown.
In operation, clay is placed in the cylinder through the door 4 upon the screen 6, and sufficient Water is added to start the operation. The door is then closed and the cyl inder is rotated, steam being admitted through the pipe 8. The rotation of the drum, through the medium of the conveyers 5 and screen 6 causes the water, steam and clay to be intermixed to form .a creamy paste. The conveyors raising the clay and depositing it on the screen thoroughly breaks up and mixes the clay. After the proper mixture has been made, the door 4 is opened, and if there are any lumps of clay or foreign matter, these will lie on the upper surface of the screen and can be removed before the aste is removed. After the heavy matter as been removed from the screen 6, the drum is rotated sufiiciently to allow the paste to be poured out through the door t into a proper receiving vessel.
The advantages of my invention result from the provision of a rotating cylinder, having the series of longitudinally extending agitators, and the longitudinally extending screen in the central portion of the cylinder, to break up and thoroughly mix any material which is placed therein. Also in providing means whereby steam may be admitted through a journal of the mixer to soften and heat the material to be mixed.
It will be readily understood that the screen can be made of the proper size wire mesh to meet the requirements of the mate rial to be mixed. Also, that a pipe similar to the pipe 8 may lead in through the opposite ournal in order to supply any other liquid to the mixer.
l claim:
A mixer comprising a rotary drum having a hollow journal and provided with lifting blades, a longitudinally extending screen Within said drum dividing it into two compartments, and means lor conveying steam through said journal into said compartments, substantially as described. In testlmony whereof, I have hereunto set l my hand.
THOMAS M. PHILLIPS.
