Specification of Letters Patent. Iatpnfgd 25 1926.
Application filed September 1 8. 1919. Serial No. 32%.436.
To 11/] whom it may con/rm Be it known that we. doll}; L. lnizo and 'TSAHELLE llnzvxn. citizens of the'd'ni d States. residing in the city and State of .New York, have jointly invented a new and useful Improvement in Wooden l rench Shoe- Heels, of which the following is a specification.
The invent-ion relates to wooden French shoe heels. and the object is to provide a combined fastening for securing the heel to the shoe and the top-lift tothe heel. without the danger of breaking and chipping the edges ol' the heel by the nails usually employed for attaching the lift. and in such manner that the top-lift can he removed when worn and replaced by another-without disturbing the fastening of the/heel.
This is :u-complished by "means ot' a threepiece fastening extending longittulinally or axially through a preformed opening in the heel. the same comprising an upper member having a screw-threaded= stein inserted downward into the upper part of the opening and having a head to overlie a portion of the sole. an intermediate headed or shouldered member inserted upward from the bottom and screw-threaded to engage the upper member and therebv clamp the heel to the shoe. and a bottom headed screw which is passed upward through an interior hole in the top-lift into the axial hole of the heel, where it engages a tapped socket in the intermediate member. I
In the accompanying drawings. tornung a part hereof:
diate portion of relatively narrow diaine-.
he and upper and lower portions of relatively wide diameter. 1 fastening member 4 has a stem o inserted downward through a slot in the insole into the upper part ot the hole. fitting the same. and a flat, rearwardly disposed head 6 bearing upon the upper side of said insole. The stem 5 is hollow and is internally screw-threaded from the bottom up 'ard. wThis member is advantageously constructed of a single piece of sheet metal having its lowerportion rolled to form the tubular stem and its upper portion bentback flat in obtuse angular relation to form the-head.
A long externally-threaded screw T having a kert'ed' h ad 8 at its lower end extends upward through the intermediate, narrower portion of the hole in the heel and screws into the stem of the upper member. \Vhen the screw is screwed up tight its head bears againstthe shoulder in the lower part of the heel and the head is drawn down upon the top of the sole or insole, the relation being such that the heel isfirmly clamped in place. and by a pressure which bears particularly at the back. so that gaping is overcome.
The lower headed part of'the screw 7 is also recessed and internally threaded. and this socket fl is engaged by the third member consisting of a short headed screw 10. This screw passes through an opening in the interior region of the toplift 2, into said socket 9. and when tightened firmly.
holds the top-lift without possibility of injuring the delicate edges of the wooden body. When the top-lift is to be taken off and a new one put on. the screw 10 is removed. but this does not affect the body of the heel which remains rigidly tlamped in place.
\l'hat we claim as new is:
l. The combination with a high wooden shoe heel having an opening extending from 'its top to its bottom. and a top-lift. of a member having a threaded stein inserted downward from the top of the opening and a head to overlie a portion of the sole of the shoe. a second threaded member inserted upward in the opening from below to engage the first threaded member and thereby fasten the heel to theshoe, and a screw passing through the top-lift andthreaded into said second member to secure the toplift.
'12. The combination with a high Wooden shoe heel havihg a shouldered opening extending from its top to its bottom, and a top-lift, of av member having an internallythreaded socket in its lower portion, and a threaded stem in the upper part of the short screw fastening the top-lift extendopening and a head to overlie a portion of 111g upward into the socket of the long 10 the sole, a long headed screw extending upscrew.
ward in the opening and engagin" said internally-threaded stem, whereby the heel is JOHN L. FREQ. clamped in place, said screw having a ISABELLE IIENNE.
