CHRISTIAN H. GUDEGAST, OF RICHMOND HILL, NEW YORK.
PHONOGRAPELCABINET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 18, 1920.
Application filed October 29, 1919. Serial No. 334,341.
To all 'l0/icm, t may concer/1t:
Be it known that l, Crnus'riin lil. Gunn- GAs'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Richmond Hill, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Phonograph-Cabinets; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
rlhis invention relates to phonograph cabinets, and more particularly to improved means tor containing needles to be used in connection with the phonograph.
rlhe objects of the invention are to provide a needle holder in which the needles are not only protected against dust and dirt, but are kept separate Alirom the used needles; to this end to provide a slide which must be drawn out to expose the needles; to provide such a slide which will be handy to the operator, will not destroy the good appearance of the cabinet, will be a permanent part oi' the cabinet, and may be readily manutace tured,
Referring to the accompanying drawings in which like numerals of reference indicate the same parts throughout the views,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a phonograph cabinet to which my invention has lbeen applied;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the slide removed from the cabinet, and
Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view as upon line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
1n the specific embodiment ot the invention, illustrated in said drawing, the reference numeral 1 indicates a phonograph cabinet having the usual hinged top 2 adapted to close over the turn table 3 above the lined top l. Preferably, immediately beneath the lined tope I provide one or more slides 5 which, when slid into the cabinet in normal position, are directly beneath said top and covered thereby so as to be protected against dust and dirt. Preferably, furthermore, Vthis slide is provided with one or more recesses 6, said recesses having cups 7 inserted therein to receive the needles, it being understood that said recesses are open only at the top of the slide and of a size in proportion to receive the cup 7. Preterably said oups are made from sheet metal with the upper edge spun to provide an outwardly and downwardly directed flange 8 which not `only adds to the appearance of the slide, but forms a stop by which the cup is held against being inserted in the recess G too far, and also assists the operator in taking hold oi' a needle in removing it from the cup. While l have shown the slide provided with three cups,`it is to be understood that any number desired may be employed. i'referably, however, the cups are inserted in the slide at a distance from the front end thereof so that slight jarring open oi' the slide will not expose the cups.
The outer end oi' the slide is provided with a suitable head 9 which not only acts as a stop for limiting the distance which the slide may be inserted, but also will close the crevice between the slide and cabinet, thus excluding dust and the like. As may be seen in the drawing, a suitable handle or knob 10 is provided upon the head 9 by which the slide may be drawn out.
Means are provided for retaining the slide as a permanent part of the cabinet: that is, to prevent its being entirely withdrawn. In the drawing, this feature oi' the invention is carried out by providing a longitudinal slot 11 at one side of the slide, and at the inner end of the slide is provided a stop, such as a screw 12, in said slot. Coperating with this stop 12 is a stop 13, shown also as a screw. This stop or screw 13 is carried by the cabinet and projects into the slot 11 so that stop 12 on the slide will engage it and prevent further outward movement of the slide. Preferably, said slot 13 is near the front of the cabinet to permit the slide to be withdrawn almost to its inner end, though, of course, this may be varied as found desirable, since withdrawal. of the slide is only necessary far enough to expose the cups with which said slide is provided.
1t will beY particularly noted that the slide occupies a position in the cabinet which would not otherwise be utilized, and that the new needles which will be placed in the cups thereof will not be within the portion of the cabinet containing the turn table as a result of which, needles which have been used and accidentally dropped or otherwise leift in that part of the cabinet, will not be mixed with the new needles carried by the slides. In this connection, it may be pointed out that a suitable cup 14 is provided within the turn table portion of the cabinet for receiving the old needles, and these very often become spilled or are not put in the cup at While I have shown one embodiment for carrying out my invention, it is to be under* stood that I do not restrict myself to the details of the present showing except as required by the following claim when con strued in the` light of the prior art.
Having thus described my invention7 I claim:
i In :i phonograph cabinet having@ turn table Compartment needle receiving means in said compartment, a slide 'adapted to be 15 inserted in said cabinet independent of said turn table compartment, said slide having ineens for receiving needles therein4 whereby needles in the receiving means rof seid turn table compertment end the needle receiving 20 means of the slide Will not become mixed.
