ROPE AND CABLE ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented MaylS, 1920.
Application filed October 18, 1918, Serial No. 258,678. kenewed octpber 9,-1919. Serial No. 329,642.
lb all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Trroims C. Moor-in, a citizen of the United. States, residing at San l rancisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hope and Cable Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to hooks adapted for quick connection to cables and the like.
An important object of this invention is to provide a hook adapted for attachment to the cable of the riggingof an oil well pump. In the hooks now in use, a hollow shank extends from the hook portion and is adapted to receive the end of a cable. Hot babbitt is poured about the cable within the shank portion of the hook and serves to see cure the end portion of the cable within the :shank. This particular mode of attaching the end portion of a cable to the hook, prior ;to the engaging of the hook with the rigging of the oil well necessitates the stopping of the well for three or four hours with the result that three or four hundred barrels of oil is lost.
A further object of this invention is to provide means for quickly and reliably attaching the cable of the rigging to the hook.
A further object of the invention is to provide a heck of the character described, which is of highly simplified construction, few in parts and desirable in use. i
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same, i
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a hook cmbodied in my invention,
Fig. 2 is aplan view of the same,
Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 4: is'a vertical transverse taken on line 4c-4: of Fig. 1, ,7
Fig. 5 is a vertical transverse section through the shank of my improved hook, showing a groove adapted for the receptic -n of the bight portions of the outer hooks, and,
section section F ig. G is a vertical transverse section through the shank of my improved hook. showing the groovesforen-gaging the inner U-bOllSi In the drawings, wherein for the purpose ofillustration, is'shown the preferred em- :bodiment of my invention, the numeral 10 tionof a. cablefl i. T he end portions of the shank are provided in their outer surface withtransverse grooves 15. .U-bolts 16 are adapted to have theinbight portions 1'7 in rigid engagement with the transverse grooves 15, thus securely attaching and non removably engaging the U-bolts with the shank. he inner portion of the shank 12 is provided with apair of substantially vertical grooves 18 adapted for the reception of the arms of U-bolts 19, having their bight portions 20 engaging the cable 14,- as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 4. The shank 12 is semi-circular in cross section.
The U-bolts 16 and 19 are provided with apertured plates 21 fitting over the end portions thereof. Nuts 22 are adapted to partake of threaded engagement with the threaded end portions of the arms of the several U-shaped bolts.
ln applyiiig my improved hook to a cable, it will be ap arent that the inner U-bolts are removed rom the shank and the cable placed within the longitudinal groove 13 and between the arms of the outer U-bolts 16. The caps or plates 21T0f the U-bolts 16 are then engaged with thebuter sides of the cable 141 prior to the application of the nuts 22 to the arms of the U-bolts 16. Upon securely engaging the outer U-bolts with the cable, the inner bolts are applied to the cable and the shank, said U-bolts having their bight portions 20 engaged with the outer surface of the cable 14. By reason of the outer bolts 16 being permanently secured to the shank 12, a more efficient attaching of thexzable 14: to the shank may be effected.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is understood that I may make such minor changes in arrangement and construction of I claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is l. A device of the character described comprising, a hook; a shank extending rearwardly of the hook and having a longitudinally extending cable receiving groove in its inner face, said shank being semi-circular in cross section; a pair of U-bolts having their bi ght portions surrounding the outer face of the end portions of the shank and rigidly secured thereto; a second pair of U-bolts having their bight portions in engagement with the outer side of the cable; and means to retain the U-bolts in engagement with the shank and the cable.
2. A device of the character described comprising, a hook; a shank extending rear wardly of the hook and having a longitudinally extending cable receiving groove in its inner face, said shank having transversely extending grooves in its outer end portions; a pair of U-bolts having their bight portions disposed in said transversely extending grooves and rigidly secured to said shank; a second pair of U-bolts having their bight portions in engagement with the outer side of the cable; and means to retain the U-bolts in engagement with the shank and cable.
3. A device of the character described comprising, a hook; a shank extending rearwardly of the hook and having a longitudinally extending cable receiving groove in its inner face, said shank being semi-circular in cross section and having a pair of transversely extending grooves in its end portions; a pair of U-bolts having their bight portions disposed in said grooves and rigidly secured to said shank, said shank having pairs of vertically disposed grooves in its inner portion; a second pair of U-bolts having their arms disposed in said vertical grooves and having their bight portions surrounding the outer side of the cable; apertured plates arranged over the end portions of the arms of the U-shaped bolts; and nuts having threaded engagement with the end portions of the U-bolts.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
