Description

UNITED STATES rETER B. GRoAT, or HANNIBAL, MrssoURr.
IMPROVEMENT IN CARD-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 134,051, dated December 17, 1872.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER B. GROAT, of Hannibal, Marion county, Missouri, have invented certain Improvements in Card or Advertisement Holders, of which the following is a specification; and I do hereby declare that the same is a full, clear, and exact description of my said invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates-to a metallic open card or advertisement holder, which may be placed either against a wall or in such wise that both sides are utilized as advertising mediums. T he holder proper is composed of grooved or corrugated strips, in which the metal is distributed so as to give thereto the greatest available stiii'ness and strength, answering substantially in their purpose to the ordinary sash of a window-frame, but differ in that the strips admit ofthe removal at pleasure of the advertising-cards slipped therein. The strips may be varied in number, forming any desired number of advertising-squares. The vertical strips, excepting those at the exterior of the device, are adapted to secure one side of two separate cards, being doubly grooved. The upper horizontal strip of each square differs from the vertical strip in that it is open, permitting the cards to be inserted or removed.
If the device is to be suspended in the center of an apartment the advertising cards are placed back to back so that the reading matter can. be examined from either side. The grooved strips may be adapted to receive two thicknesses of cards', together with two of glass, or only one of each; or one or two cards, without glass, may be used, as the manufacturer or advertisermay elect. To give greater strength to the various strips, and to make the edges v thereof which come in contact with the advertising-card smooth or rounding, I bend or lap over the edges of the strips, so that the portions of the strips which are overlapped present a double thickness of metal.
In the further description of my invention which follows due reference must be had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a front view of my inventio; Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same; and Fig. 3.is a transverse section ofthe same.
Similar letters of reference indicate similar parts of the invention in all the figures.
A A are the solid parts of the frame. B B are the external grooved or corrugated strips. C is the bottom strip, required, with those B, to be but singly grooved. D is a vertical doublygrooved strip, and E a strip connecting those B B and D together. Between the strip E and the upper solid part A of the device a space is left to admit of the insertion of the cards or glass. The solid and skeleton parts oi' the holder are securely soldered together. F F are the advertising-cards. G G are plates of glass. H is apocket for the purpose of holding small advertising-cards for public distribution. The overlapping parts ot' the various strips are shown by b. These parts are stamped or hammered over so that the thickness of those portions of the strips over lapped is only increased to just double that of the sheet metal.
The merits of my invention lie in that it may Ybe simply constructed, is strong, light, cheap,
and offers greater surface for the occupancy of advertising matter than other devices of a similar character.
I claim as my invention- As a new article of manufacture, the bulletin-board, constructed of sheet metal, having the solid pieces AA at top and bottom, in combination with the strips B C E D, the latter having the edges b thereof upturned, both at front and back, for the purpose of securing the required rigidity without the use of aboard back, while by reason of the double pockets formed by said strips either a single or a double-faced card, or two cards, may be inserted, as fully described and shown.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my naine.
PETER B. GROAT.
