To all whom may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY SArroRn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Little Rock, in the county of Pulaski, State of Arkansas, have invented a new and useful Copy and Book Holder; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The invention relates to copy and book holders and has for its'object'to provide a holder of this character which is foldable and provided with a centrally disposed supporting bracket, said bracket being held'in various positions by-a toothed gear carried by a support with the teeth of which gear a pawl cooperates.

A further object is to provide a copy and book holder which .may be supported by a wall, the horizontal portion ofiadesk or the back of a desk seat, which is inclined. Also to provide spring actuated members carried by the sides and ends of the sections forming the book holder, said spring actuated members being adapted to engage and overlie the marginal edges of'the book so as to hold the same against displacement.

A further object is to provide pointers pivotally carried by the lower ends ofeach section of the book holder, said pointers comprising pivoted sections so that the pointer may be placed in registration with various lines-011 the book, so that thecopy may be easily followed. 7

A further object is to provide pivoted legs carried by the sections of the book holder, which pivoted legs .may'bepositionedso as to support the copy and book holder on a desk or table. 1

lVith the aboveand other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in thedrawings, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of. what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In the drawings Figure 1 is a front view of the copy holder showing the various parts'folded to positions where the two sections of the copy holder may be allowed to fold and be secured to each other.

Fig. 2 is a rear view of a copy holder showing the parts in the same positions as they are shown in Fig. 1.

Fig. 6 is a detail view of abracket adapted to be secured .to a wall to which the main supporting bracket may be attached.

Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a pair of rectangular shaped frames, which frames at their inner adjacent sides are provided with inwardly extending arms 2, the ends of which are provided with eyes 3 through which eyes a vertically disposed rod 1 passessoas to form a hinging point for the sections in relation to each other. The frames 1 are provided with horizontally disposed bracing bars 5, which brace each frame 1 and maintain each frame 1 in shape. The outer edges *of the frames 1 are provided with springactuated hooks 6 which overlie the outer edges of the book when the same is opened and placed in position on the foldable booksupporting members 7, which are pivoted" as at 8 'to'the lower rail of each of the frames 1. The supporting members 7 being provided with flat members 9 which engage tneieaves of the book for maintaining the leaves in.engagement with each other so that the leaves will be flat and the print thereon may be easily copied or read. Passing upwardly through the brace bars 5 andxthenpper'rails 10 of the frames '1 are the arms 11 of L- shaped book holding members 12, which members are normally held inwardly by means of coiled springs 13, which coiled springs are connected to the arms 1121s at 1 1 and to one of the brace rods '5' as at 15. The L-shaped members are adapted to hook over and overlie theupper marginal edge of the book when the same is POSltlOIlQClYlll'zthB holderso as to hold the upper edges of the pages against displacementjduring a-copying or reading operation.

6 and 12 are limited in their inward movement by means of lugs 16 which enga e the upper and side rails of the frames 1. 1 ivoted as at 17 to brackets 18 carried by the lower rails 19 of the frames 1 are pointers 20, which pointers are formed from a series of members 21 pivoted together as at 22. By forming the pointers 20 from a series of sections pivoted together, it will be seen that the pointers may be positioned in registration with any line on. the book or any word if so desired.

Secured to the rear faces of the frames 1 as at 23 are springs 24, which springs arch the rod 1 and are sufiiciently bowed so that the sections or frames 1 may be folded with their front faces in engagement with each other, when it is desired to fold the copy holder for storage, shipping or other purposes.

Pivotally secured as at 25 to the rod 1 is a bracket 26, the outer end of said bracket being pivoted as at 27 to a toothed wheel 28, which toothed wheel is secured by means of screws 29 to a bracket 30. The bracket 30 is provided with notches 31, by means of which notches the bracket 30 may be secured to the edge of a desk or the inclined back of a chair or bench. The bracket 30 may be also secured to a wall 82 by placing the portion 33 of the bracket between the ears 3% of a plate 35, which plate may be secured to the wall by means of screws. Pivoted to the brackets 26 as at 86 is a spring actuated dog 37, which dog is adapted to engage the teeth of the ratchet wheel 28 so that the copy holder may be supported at various angles in a vertical plane to the bracket 30. Thus it will be seen that the copy holder when the bracket 30 is secured to a support may be adjusted to various inclinations so the the copy thereon may be easily read. W hen it is desired to use the copy holder as a stand or easel as shown in Fig. at all that will be necessary for the operator to do is to fold the bracket 80 and the bracket 26 inwardly against the rear face of one of the frames 1, then position the legs 38 and 89 to the positions shown in Fig. 4, the legs being pivoted as at 39 and all) to the frames 1.

From the above it will be seen that a copy holder is provided which may be supported in any position desired and one wherein the leaves of the book or copy will be held flat so that the reading matter thereon may be easily read. It will also be seen that a copy holder is provided which may be easily and quickly folded for storage purposes and when in use is provided with pointers adapted to be placed in registration with. various lines or words in the copy so that the place in the copy will be maintained during a copying operation.

The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is 2- 1. A copy holder comprising a pair of frames hingedly connected to each other, bowed springs arching their pivotal points, the arching portions of said springs allowing the sections to be folded onto each other, means carried by the sections for supporting and holding a book, pointers carried by the sections for indicating lines in the printed matter on the book and a bracket carried by the holder for supporting said holder in various positions.

2. A copy holder comprising a pair of frames hingedly connected to each other, bowed springs arching their pivotal points, the arching portions of the spring allowing the sections to be folded onto each other, spring actuated L-shaped members carried by the outer sides and tops of the sections for engaging the edges of a book, support ing means carried by the lower rails of the sections for supporting the book, pointers carried by each section for maintaining the line positions on the book, a bracket carried by the rear face of the holder at the hinging point between the sections, said bracket having a dog and 'atchet connection with a bracket adapted to be secured to a supporting member, said dog and ratchet con nection allowing the copy holder to be adjusted to various positions in a vertical plane.

3. A copy holder comprising a pair of frames hingedly connected to each other, bowed springs arching their pivotal point, the arching portions of the springs allowing the sections to be folded onto each other, spring actuated L-shaped members carried by the frames and adapted to overlie the marginal edges of the book for holding the book, supporting members earriedby the lower sides of the frames for supporting the book, said book supporting members being pivotally connected to the frames so that they may be folded outwardly or inwardly, a bracket horizontally pivoted to the rear side of the holder, said bracket having a dog and ratchet connection with a second bracket bymeans of which the copy holder may beadj usted to various angles in a vertical plane, and means carried by the second bracket whereby the same may be secured and supported on a horizontal, vertical or inclined support.
