AUGUST NIKANDER, 0F DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 18, 1920.
Application filed October 21, 1918. Serial No. 258,979.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, AUGUST NIKANDER, citizen of Finland, Russia, residing at the city of Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in lVrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wrenches in which the adjustment or setting of one of the jaws is effected by a rotary movement of the wrench handle, and the object of the invention is to provide a wrench of this kind which is strong and durable, and also simple in construction, the parts being so constructed and arranged that they can be easily assembled.
In order that the invention may be better understood, reference is had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, and in said drawing,
Figure 1 is an elevation of the wrench, and
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section thereof.
Referring specifically to the drawing 5 and 6 denote the respective jaws of the wrench. The jaw 5 is on the outer end of a shank 7 having its inner end made in the form of an externally screw-threaded stem 8.
The inner jaw 6 is on the outer end of a shank 9 provided with a longitudinal opening 10 through which the shank 7 slidably passes, this opening being angular in crosssection, and the shank 7 having a corresponding cross-section, to prevent relative rotation of the parts.
At 11 is shown the handle of the wrench, the same being of wood or any other material. The handle has a central longitudinal opening in which seats a metallic sleeve 12 into which the screw-stem 8 extends. At the forward end of the handle, the sleeve 12 carries a nut 13 through which the stem 8 is threaded. The nut is an integral enlargement at the forward end of the sleeve, and the handle end abuts against the base of the nut.
Against the butt end of the handle 11 and the sleeve 12 is clamped a cap plate 14 having a central threaded aperture to receive a screw 15, which latter is also screwed into the butt end of the sleeve, the same being internally threaded for this purpose. It will therefore be seen that the handle 11 and the sleeve 12 are coupled together to turn as one plece, and in view of the simplicity of the structure the parts can be easily assembled.
The shank 9 of the j aw 6 is coupled to the handle 11 in such a manner that endwise separation of the parts is prevented, but the handle is left free to be rotated. The coupling means comprise two metallic plates 16 fastened to the nut 13 on diametrically opposite sides thereof and projecting for a short distance over the butt end of the shank 9, the latter being here circular in cross-section, and having an encircling external groove 17 in which seat the inturned extremities 18 of the plates 16. The inner end of the shank 9 abuts against the nut 13.
In operation, the jaw 5 is adjusted by turning the handle 11, which, through the engagement of the nut 13 with the screw stem 8 of the shank 7 of said jaw, advances or retracts the latter. The shank 9 may be grasped with one hand, leaving the other hand free to grasp the handle 11 and turn the same.
I claim:
A wrench comprising inner and outer jaws, shanks carrying said jaws, the inner jaw shank having a longitudinal opening through which the outer jaw shank slidably passes, and said outer jaw shank having an externally threaded stem at its inner end, a handle, a sleeve embedded longitudinally in the handle, into which sleeve the threaded stem extends, a nut on the forward end of the sleeve through 'which the stem is threaded, the handle abutting against one face of the nut, and the rear end of the inner jaw shank abutting against the other face of the nut, said inner jaw shank having an annular groove, coupling members carried by the nut and slidably engaging the groove for locking the inner jaw shank and the nut against endwise separation, a cap plate engaging the butt end of the handle and the sleeve, and a fastening member threaded through the cap and into the sleeve. I
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
AUGUST NIKANDER.
