To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, ANDREW B. Arena, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mapleton Depot, in the county of Huntingdon and State. of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wrenches and aims to provide a construction wherein the jaws can be quickly adjusted relatively, and subsequently actuated to take a tight hold upon the article to be grasped through the instrumentality of a lever utilized to con trol the movements of one oi the jaws.
To this end, the invention makes use of a lever for controlling the movements of one of the jaws, the lever being associated with the said jaw in a manner so that it can be readily and easily separated to permit the said jaw to be initially moved by hand toward and away from the other jaw, after which adjustment the lever is again associated with the first mentioned jaw so that the aws upon movement of the lever can be brought into effective gripping relation to take proper hold upon the article to be grasped.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood. when the following detail description is taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the invention residing in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as claimed.
In the drawing forming part of the specification like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views and wherein Figure 1 is side elevation of the wrench constructed in. accordance, with my invention.

Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.

Referring to the drawing in detail, the wrench comprises a handle 10 which may be of any suitablelength and formed at one end. to provide a jaw 11. A sleeve 12 is secured to the handle 10 immediately adjacent the jaw 11, and projecting beyond one of the longitudinal edges of the handle 10 to embrace the shank 13 from the other jaw of the Wrench indicated at 14:. A. yoke 15 is secured to the shank 13 of the jaw 1a and is projected to slidably receive the handle 10. This yoke also projects beyond the opposite longitudinal edge of the shank 13 for a purpose to be hereinafter described.
Pivoted upon the handle 10 is the oiiset extremity 16 of a lever 17 which is disposed in juxtaposition with the handle 10 for movement toward and away from the latter. Carried by the offset extremity 16 is a threaded. element 18. This element being threaded along two opposed edges only as at 19. The shank 13 of the jaw 14: is grooved longitudinally for a portion of its length, as at 20. This groove receives one of the longitudinal threaded edges of the element 18, when the element is associated in the manner shown in Fig. 1. As shown, in this instance, this element 18 is received within the yoke 15 and is positioned between the yoke and the shank 13. The yoke supports a nut 21 for partial rotation, the element 18 being received by the nut. The nut is threaded at diametrically opposite points as at 22 and is also recessed at diametrically opposite points as at 23. The nut is provided with a projection 24 constituting the manipulating element by means of which the nut can be conveniently and easily rotated in either direction for the purpose to be presently described. Carried by the yoke 15 is a stop element 25 which is disposed in the path of movement of the element 24: to limit the movement of the nut in one direction.
In practice, the element 24 is operated to turn the nut 21 so that the recessed portions 23 receive the threaded longitudinal edges 19 of the element 18. in this position of parts the sleeve 15, together with the shanks 13 is free to move upon the handle 10. The sleeve is then adjusted upon the handle in the proper direction to position the jaw 1a with respect to the jaw 11 to accommodate the article to be grasped. Subsequent to this initial adjustment, the element 24 is actuated to reverse the position of rotation of the nut 21, to bring the threaded portions 22 into engagement with the threads 19 of the ele ment 18. When the parts are positioned in this manner, the shank 13 is fixed relatively with respect to the element 13, so that when the lever 17 is moved in the direction of the handle 10, the jaws 11 and 14 are brought toward each other into gripping relation for the purpose of effecting a tight hold upon the article positioned between the jaws. The construction and arrangement of parts permits the wrench to be readily and conveniently operated in a manner and for the purposes specified.
While it is believed that from the foregoing description the nature and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent, I desire to have it understood that what I have shown and described is merely illustrative, of, one embodiment thereof, that I do not limit myself to any details, and that such changes may be resorted to when desired as fall within the scope of what is claimed.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new is 1. A wrench comprising a handle, a jaw at one end thereof, a second jaw having a shank, said shank being arranged for sliding movement in parallelism with the handle, a sleeve carried by the handle and slidably receiving said shank, a yoke carried by the shank and slidably embracing said handle, a nut arranged on said yoke, said nut having interrupted threads, a lever pivoted upon the handle, a threaded element proj ecting from said lever and received by said nut, whereby a fixed connection may be made between the lever and said shank to adjust the second mentioned jaw by means of said lever.

A wrench comprising a handle, a jaw at one end thereof, a second jaw having a shank, said shank being arranged for sliding movement in parallelism with the handle, a sleeve carried by the handle and slidably receiving the shank, a yoke carried by the shank and slidably embracing the handle, a nut arranged on said yoke, the nut having interrupted threads, a lever mounted upon the handle, a threaded element proj ecting from said lever and received by said nut, whereby a fixed connection may be made between the lever and said shank to adjust the second mentioned jaw by means of said lever, a finger engaging element projecting from said nut and operating in a slot in said yoke, and means for limiting the movement of said element in one direction.

A wrench comprising a handle, a jaw at one end thereof, a second aw having a shank, said shank being arranged for sliding movement in parallelism with the handle, a sleeve carried by the handle and slidably receiving said shank, a yoke carried by the shank and slidably. embracing the handle, a nut arranged within the yoke and having an interrupted thread, a lever pivoted upon the handle, a threaded element projecting from said lever and received by said nut, a member carried by the nut projecting through a slot in the yoke and adapted to adjust the nut said nut when engaged with the threaded element providing a connection between the lever and said shank to adjust the movable jaw and saidlever.
A wrench comprising a handle, a jaw at one end thereof, a second jaw having a shank, said shank being arranged for sliding movement in parallelism with the handle, a sleeve carried by the handle and slid ably receiving the shank, a yoke carried by the shank and slidably embracing the handle, a lever pivoted on the handle, a nut arranged within the yoke and having an interrupted thread, a threaded element pro jecting from the lever and received by said nut, a member carried by the nut projecting through a slot in the yoke for turning the nut, said nut when engaged by the threaded element providing a connection whereby the movable jaw may be adjusted under the influence of said lever, and means carried by the yoke and disposed in the path of movement of said member to limit the adjustment of the nut in one direction.
5. A wrench comprising a handle, a jaw at one end thereof, a second jaw having a shank, said shank being arranged for sliding movement in parallelism with the handie, a sleeve carried by the handle and slidably receiving said shank, a yoke carried by the shank and slidably embracing the handle, a lever pivoted upon the handle, a.
threaded element projecting from said lever and received by the yoke, said element being threaded along two of its longitudinal edges, a nut carried by the yoke and receiving said element, said nut having an interrupted thread, and means for turning said nut to associate said element with the nut in a manner whereby the second mentioned jaw may be moved under the influence of the lever, said means also separating said parts whereby the jaw can be moved independently of said lever.
