FOLDING momma-BOARD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 18, 1920.
Application filed January 20, 1920. Serial No. 352,913.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, RALPH Fox, a citizen of the United States, residin at Wooster, in the county of Wayne and tate of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Folding Ironing-Board, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in folding ironingboards and its primary object is to provide improved means for supporting the free end of the ironing-board, whereby more room is afforded underneath the same; second, to provide better and stronger meaus'for supporting the free end of said board in use, and third, to simplify the folding without diminishing the strength of the apparatus; and it consists of the novel features and combination of parts as hereinafter fully set forth and as stated in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters and figures of reference indicate like parts. Referring thereto, Figurel, is a side elevation of an ironing-board embodying my invention; Fig. 2, is a like view of the same folded together, and these appear to be sufiicient for illustration. In the drawings, A is the ironing-board proper, B is a diagonal support, and C is a vertical support com posed of two vertical members framed together, and provided with feet 11 adapted to stand upon a floor; each of said members is provided with a lateral projection F at its upper end, adapted to receive thereunder a horizontal latch E. D is a small ironingboard mounted on a rotatable support (2 and arranged to swing sidewise over the board A, and to be removable therefrom at pleasure. This feature, however, is not new, and no specific claim is made thereto by me. The novel supporting and folding devices cooperate by means of a pair of strap-hinges H and G, one of which connects the upper end of the diagonal support B to the adj acent standard 0 at a point near the under side of the adj acent end of the board A, and so as to engage a notch 2 therein, by the upper end 3 of the diagonal support Bthe latter being preferably constructed with a pair of bars in all respects alike and joined together, substantially as shown, and each of said bars is hinged in the manner, above set forth, to the respective adjacent standards C; the other hinge, G, is secured to a cross-bar l which rests upon the upper side of the support B near its upper end, and to the under side of the board A, so that the latter rests upon the upper edge of said cross bar at. The arrangement is such that when the device is in folded position shown in Fig. 2, it maybe readily brought into unfolded and operative position shown in Fig. 1 by simplylifting up the outer end aof the board A, whereby the supports B and C will automatically take the normal positions therein shown, by the action of the pair of hinges H and G on both sides of said supports, and the extended adjacent ends 5 of the board A will slip over the upper ends F of the standards C sufficient to permit the latch E,.shown in dotted lines E, to be swung sidewise between the lateral projections F and 5 whereby the outer end a is firmly held in elevated position, and resting solidly upon the hinged supports as aforesaid.
The mutual cooperation of said hinged members tightens the apparatus, and pressure upon the outer end a only serves to make the frame work more rigid. Removal of the latch by swinging it outwardly in the Y direction of the arrow, and folding it on its end pivot around upon the upper side of the board A, permits the outer ends a and 1 to be folded in the direction of the arrows at said points, automatically. Thus a strong, safe and rigid ironing-board is provided, having a larger opening underneath it, and more space is afforded for handling sewed-together garment-s than heretofore, and the board and its supports may be more readily folded together.
I do not limit my claim, to mere form, but it is subject to such modifications as are reasonably within its scope.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. In a device of the character described, the combination with an ironing board, of a supporting frame comprising a pair of standards having lateral projections at their tops, said board having in its end slots receiving said standards, and a diagonal support intermediate said board and standards, hinged to both at and near its upper and adjacent end, and means insertible between said projections and said board for latching the front end of said board to said standards, substantially as set forth.
2. In a device of the character described; the combination With an ironing-board, of a supporting frame, comprising a pair of standards and a diagonal support inter mediate said board and said standards, said diagonal support hinged to said board and to said standards at its junction therewith respectively, said board and standards having overlapping and spaced projections re- 10 spectively, and a latch adapted to engage between said projections, substantially as set forth.
In Witness whereof I hereunto set my hand this 20th day of September 1919 in presence of tWo Witnesses.
RALPH FOX.
