PAPER CLIP. APPLICATION FILED OCT. 28. I919.

JOSEPH J. OBRIEN, OF SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
PAPER-CLIP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 18, 1920.
Application filed October 28, 1919. Serial No. 333,988.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH J. OBRIEN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper-Clips, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in paper clips and is directed to a paper clip having interfitting loops providing paper gripping jaws, the terminal of the, inner loop being extended cross-wise to provide a thumb engageable bar, whereby the two loops or jaws may be separated to facilitate ready insertion of paper between the jaws, and to provide means whereby an index or memorandum card may be attached to the paper or record sheet, in such manner that it will project edge-wise of the paper, so that the memorandum or index card will stand out from the paper, thus permitting easy inspection when the paper is arranged in a pile or stack, or also permitting easy removal of the card from the paper.
Another feature of the invention is that the terminals of the clip are deflected so that they will have biting engagement with the paper in one position, or stand out from the paper in the other position, to afl'ord easy insertion of a card between the terminal and the paper to which the jaws of the clip are connected- Another feature of the invention is that the laterally deflected terminal of the inner jaw, indents the paper along a line different from that of the parallel bars of-the jaws, so that increased resistance is offered by the clip to frictional displacement or slid- %till another feature of the invention is the provision of a clip which can be manufactured at less cost, by providing means whereby the wire of which it is composed may be initially grasped by the forming dies, instead of forced between shaped dies.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of certain new and useful constructions, combinations and arapplied to a number of sheets of paper, and
a card held by the clip against the paper.
Referring to the accompanying drawings A designates the clip which is formed with parallel bars B and C, which are connected to each other by the U-shaped portion D..
A third bar E is connected to the bar C, by the U-shaped portion F, and this bar is connected to the fourth bar G by the U-shaped portion H. The bars 0 and G lie contiguous to each other, and the bars B and E lie contiguous to each other. The U-shaped portions D and H are longitudinally spaced from each other to provide a relatively wide clearance I, all of which features are old and well known.
The bar G is extended laterally across the s ace J between the opposing bars E which it is attached, while in the other' position it will project against and have biting engagement with the paper or card, thus providing increased resistance to detachment from the paper or card.
The other terminal L, ofthe clip, is also deflected outwardl to perform a similar double function. in one position the terminal will project from the paper or card to which it is attached, thus permitting the insertion of a card between the terminal and the paper to which the clip is attached, while in the other position the terminal will project toward and have biting engagement with the paper or card.
By appl ing the thumb nail against the cross bar C the jaws formed by the loops D and H, will be easily separated, when the clip is grasped by the hand. When the clip is attached to the paper or cards it may be easily removed by pressing the nail against the cross bar.
The bars B and C and the connecting portion D form a U shaped outer. jaw and the bars G and E and the connecting portion H, the cross bar Kand the bridge portion F form a C-shaped inner jaw, one being continuous with the other. I
The cross bar K is disposed inwardly of the U shaped end or connecting bridge F a considerable distance and provides a clearance for a forming tool or the jaw of a gripping former, an arrangement which simplifies the manufacture of the clip, since the wire can be gripped between the jaws of a forming tool and then coiled upon the forming tool to form the clip.
Having described my invention I claim 1. A paper clip consisting of an outer loop, an inner loop continuous therewith, the inner and the outer loops providing paper gripping jaws, the terminal of the inner loop being disposed laterally of the loop and deflected slightly from the plane of the clip and the terminal of the outer loop being deflected slightly from the plane of the clip.
2. A material holding clip consisting of an outer U shaped jaw and an inner C- shaped jaw connected to the U shaped jaw to provide bars parallel to the sides of the U shaped jaw and transverse portions connecting said bars to each other and spaced apart from each other and from the ends of the U shaped jaw.
3. A clip for paper and the like consisting of an outer jaw including the bars B and C and the connecting portion B and an inner jaw consisting of the bars E and Gconnected to each other by the bar portion H and to the bar G by the portion F and having a cross bar K disposed inwardly of the portion F, the portion H being disposed inwardly from the portion B and spaced from the cross bar K.
Signed by me at Springfield, Massachusetts.
. JOSEPH J. OBRIEN.
