To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, MICHAEL Jol-1N Dorn, a subject oil the King of Great Britain, and a resident of Bridgeport, in the county of Faireld and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and improved Doll, o which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in toys, and pertains more particularly to the type known as figure toys.

The primary object of the present invention is to provide a figure toy and construct the same in such a manner that any one of a plurality of diil'erent expressions for the face may be obtained.

A Jfurther object of the invention is to proviee a device of this character by means of which the expressions may be changed at will.

A still further obj ect oi the invention is to construct a i'igure toy entirely of cardboard, paper or the like, thus greatly decreasing its cost of manufacture.

With the above and other objects in view, reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part ot this speciiication in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in Which- Figure 1 is a vievv in elevation of a figure toy constructed in accordance with the present invention;

Referring more particularly to the drawings, the reference character 5 designates a substantially cylindrical body member, and said cylindrical body member is provided with a cut-out portion 6 in its upper edge. This body member 5 is painted or otherwise decorated as at 7 in simulation of a childs body, the neck portion of said body termi nating at the base of the cut-out portion 6. The reference character 8 designates a skirt, Which as shown is of the plaited type, and

is constructed of paper or other suitable material and is adapted to be attached in any suitable manner to the cylindrical member 5, as shown in Fig. 2.

The reference character 9 designates the head, and said head is adapted to be rotated Within the upper open end of the bodv member 8 in such a manner that it 1s freely rotated therein. This head 9 is provided With suitable decoration 10, in the form of a crown or other headpiece. The head 9 is adapted to have its peripheral surface covered with a strip of paper 11, shown in Fig. 1l, and said strip ot paper 11 is painted or decorated to provide a plurality of different iaces, each consisting of a mouth 12, eyes 13, and a nose 14. By reference to F ig. 4, it will be seen that there are five different expressions of mouths 12 depicted, and yet for these five dii'erent mouths, there are only five diii'erent eyes. By this construction, it Will be seen that any two of the eyes may be grouped with the mouth next adjacent to said eyes.

The reference character 15 designates a suitable part of the headdress, which is formed of paper, and as shown in Fig. 6, this part is secured in position by being passed around the head 9 and havlng its free ends extending exteriorly of the body member through the cut-out portion 6.

From the foregoing description it Will be apparent that When it is desired to change the expression on the face of the toy, it is only necessary to rotate the head Within the open end of the tubular member 5, to displayk tivo eyes, a mouth and a nose through the cut-out portion.

In the present invention the body portion 5 is shown in the form of a box or receptacle for candy and other similar merchandise, but it is to be understood that the said body need not be formed as a receptacle if so desired.

While in the present instance, the body portion 5 is shown in the form of a doll, Wish it understood that in lieu of a childs body, the portion 5 may be shaped in imitatie-n of animals of various types, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

I claim:

1. A device of the character described comprising a body portion having a display opening therein, and a head provided about its peripheral surface with markings in ilo gg e 1,340,1eo

2. A head for dolls having a plurality of markings in imitation of distinct faces and so arrangedl that certain of the elements of one of said faces are adapted to function With certain elements of an adjacent face 10 to form a complete facial expression.
