. 10 Claims. This invention relates to toys, the

pensive and artistic toy also having a practical use and comprising a box or package representing a structure, such as an inanimate object for the reception of crayons and so constructed that the crayons representing figures associated with such structures, such as animate objects and carrying out the structure represented by the box, may be displayed therein in such a way as to form a toy and yet permit the crayons when removed therefrom to be set up as miniature soldiers, mariners, marines or performers, such as clowns, in rows or companies of soldiers orsailors, etc., while the crayons of different colors may be used in their ordinary way.

A further object of the invention is the provision of an ornamental box for the reception of crayons and composed of a blank having foldable portions, certain parts of the blank having cutout portions of various sizes and shapes and of a configuration conforming to the pictorial representation on the box.

A further object of the invention is the provision of crayons decorated to represent animate objects such as. soldiers, mariners, clowns, etc., whereby they may be used as toys together with the receptacle carrying the same or independently thereof and in which the headdress pictorially represented enables the pointed end of the crayon to be utilized as a part thereof.

Before explaining in detail the present improvement and mode of operation thereof, I desire to have it understood that the invention is not limited to the details of construction and arrangement of parts which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings since the invention is capable of other embodiments, and that the phraseology which I employ is for the purpose of description and not of limitation.

The toy comprises a box or package which, in the form shown in Fig. 1 consists of a back 2, front 3 and foldable sides 4, which parts are provided with tabs 5 and foldable portions 6 and 1 whereby, when folded along the dotted lines, a box of the general shape shown in Fig. 1 is provided and this box, in practice, is ornamented in some suitable way to illustrate an inanimate object.

In the form shown, the box is of a depth substantially commensurate with the crayons to be used therewith and of a sufficient height to correspond with the length of the crayons, the width of the box being determined by the number of crayons to be carried therein. 40

In the present instance, the illustration discloses a guard house for ancient soldiers, the back and front having cutout portions 9 and 10, those of the front of varying sizes and shapes and of a configuration forming a grated or grilled front or door, thereby carrying out the pictorial representation of the box.

The front is also provided with an ornamental top of a configuration different from that of the back and, in the present instance, it is shown of inverted V-shape formed as at H whereby it will extend above the top of the box when folded, concealing the top and giving it the appearance of the front of a building such as, for instance, a guard house.

Crayons l2 for use with this form of box and which may be of hexagon shape, are likewise provided with a decorative effect carrying out the theme pictorially and structurally illustrated by the box by providing a wrapper as l3 (see Fig. 3) enclosing the crayon. These crayons thus form toy soldiers which may be used independently of the box in the way of toy soldiers and when assembled with the box, certain thereof will appear through the griiled grating of the front or door, thus giving the effect of imprisoned soldiers.

In the form shown in Fig. 5, the box illustrates a sentry box or gate and with which the crayons shown in Fig. 4 may also be used, the box being formed from the blank shown in Fig. 6 a way similar to that shown in connection with Fig. 2, and it will be observed that the cut-out portion ID has at one side a configuration forming a part of the soldier represented in said Fig. 5.

In the form shown in Fig. 7, the box represents a'circus tent and is made from the blank shown in Fig. 9, which blank has parts similar to those shown in Fig. 2, the cut-out portions IQ" of different shapes and sizes with a configuration that will enable the crayons, when assembled within the box, to be displayed and, in this instance, the crayons I2 (see Fig. 3) are decorated to represent clowns or performers.

In the form shown in Fig. 10, the box pictorially represents a ship or vessel of ancient design and made from a blank similar to that shown in Fig 12 while the crayons 12 are ornamented in the manner shown in Fig. 11 to represent mariners and when assembled in the box will have certain parts thereof appearing through cut-out openings l0 located in the front of the box and likewise having varying shapes and sizes.

It will be observed that the pointed. ends of the crayons carry out the theme of the headdress of the soldier, mariner, etc., and preferably those decorative effects will be used that will enable this to be done although this is not necessary in all instances.

Various other ornamentations may be used than those illustrated. Thus it will be seen that a toy is provided for children, useful as such when the crayons are assembled a box to illustrate some inanimate object and also useful when the crayons are removed from the box since they may be used as toy soldiers, sailors, etc., and assembled as a miniature army or as miniature performers or clowns while, at the same time, the toy has a practical value in that the crayons may be used in the same way as ordinary crayons, the toy thus having an increased sales appeal.

It is to be understood that, by describing in detail herein any particular form, structure or arrangement, it is not intended to limit the invention beyond the terms of the several claims or the requirements of the prior art.

Having thus explained the nature of my said invention and described a way of constructing and using the same, although without attempting to set forth all of the forms in which it may be made or all of the modes of its use, I claim:

1. A toy comprising an ornamental box or package representing a structure and adapted to receive decorated crayons useable for artistic work and representing figures associated with such structure, the box comprising a blank having a plurality of foldable portions closeable at the .top or sides to enclose the crayons, one or more. of the sides or panels of the box having cut-out portions of a configuration conforming to the structure represented by the box and through which a part of the crayons is displayed.

2. A toy comprising an ornamental box or package representing a sentry box or guard house and adapted to receive decorated crayons useable for artistic work and representing the figures of soldiers or prisoners associated with such box, said box having openings of a configuration conforming to the structure represented by the box and so arranged that when the crayons are placed therein, certain thereof will be displayed through said openings.

A toy comprising an ornamental box or package representing a sentry box or guard house and adapted to receive decorated crayons useable for artistic work and representing the figures of soldiers or prisoners associated with such box, said box having openings of aconfiguration conforming to the structure represented by the box and so arranged that when the crayons are 'placed therein, certain thereof will be displayed through said openings, certain of the cut-out portions representing a grilled or'grated opening or door.

4. A toy comprising an ornamental box or package representing a boat adapted to receive decorated crayons useable for artistic work and representing the figures of mariners associated with such box, said box having openings of a configuration conforming to the structure represented by the box and so arranged that when the crayons are placed therein, certain thereof will be displayed through said openings.

5. A toy comprising an ornamental box or package representing a circus tent adapted to receive decorated crayons useable for artistic work and representing the figures of clowns or performers associated with such box, said bo-x havopenings of a configuration conforming to the structure represented by the box and so arranged that when the crayons are placed therein, certain thereof will be displayed through said openings.

A toy comprising an ornamental box or package representing a structure and adapted to receive decorated crayons useable for artistic work and representing figures associated with such structure, the box comprising a blank having a plurality of foldable portions closeable at the top or sides to: enclose the crayons, one or 7. 8. A toy comprising an ornamental box or package representing a structure and. adapted to receive decorated crayons useable for artistic work and representing figures associated with such structure, the box comprising a blank having a plurality of foldable portions closeable at the top or sides to enclose the crayons, one or more of the sides or panels of the box having cut-out portions of a configuration conforming to the structure represented by the box and through which a part of the crayons is displayed, said box having the front thereof at its top provided with one or more projections extending above the back and shaped to conformto the structure represented by the box.

9. Toys made of wrapped crayons useful for artistic work and having a figure decoration with the tapered end of the crayonsrepresenting a headdress in keeping with the figure decoration of the crayons.

10. A toy comprising a box or package representing a structure for the reception of a plurality of wrapped crayons, each" useful for artistic purposes and each having a figure decoration representing a figure associated with such box structure, with the tapered end of each crayon representing a headdress in keeping with the figure decoration of the crayons.
