WILLIAM H. NICE, OF WADSWORTH, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN LOTHES=WASHERS.
' Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 34,006, dated December 17, 1572.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WM. H. NICE, of Wadsworth, in the county of Medina and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and Improved Olothes-Washer, of which the following is a description:
Figure l is a side view of the clothes-Washer. Fig. 2 is a View of the inside from the bottom. Fig. 3 is a transverse section. 7
Like letters of reference refer to like, parts in the several views.
The nature of this invention relates to a certain device to be used in connection with an ordinary wash-boiler for washing clothes; and the object of the invention is to so construct said device that free access can be had to the inside for cleaning it or for other needful purposes.
Of said invention the following is a more full and specific description.
In the drawing, Fig. 1, A represents a shallow chamber of the shape and size to fit in the bottom of a wash-boiler. The top a of said chamber is perforated with holes, and from each end projects upward to the height of the boiler a conduit, B, both of which communicate with the chamber, as shown in the drawing. 0, Fig. 2, are braces for strengthening the sides of the chamber. D D are a pair of leaves, each of which is attached to the top of the chamber by hinges E, whereby said leaves can be opened, as indicated by the dotted lines a, Fig. 3, in order to obtain access to the space F, between the upper side of the leaves and the under side of the top of the chamber.
The practical operation of the above described apparatus is as follows: Itis placed in the bottom of an ordinary wash-boiler in the position shown in Fig. 1. Water is now thrown into theboiler and the clothes laid in upon the chamber. As the water boils it is forced up through the conduits and discharged upon the top of the clothes, down through which it passes, and through the perforations in the-top of the chamber into the space F, out from the ends of which it flows to the conduits, to be again carried up and discharged upon the clothes, as before said, all of which operation is common to this class of clothes-washers.
It is found in practice that dirt accumulates in the space F and obstructs a free passage of the water in. its course to the conduits. In the ordinary clothes-washer this obstruction is not easily removed, for the reason that the leaves are fixtures and cannot be opened to get access to the inside space; hence much trouble is experienced in cleaning out the dirt lodged between the top and the leaves. trouble, and to give direct access to the space F for removing the dirttherein accumulated, I
have hinged the leaves to the top, as above described, so that said leaves, when necessary, can be opened, and thereby obtain access to the space for the purpose above specified.
Claim.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The hinged leaves D D, in combination with the braces O O, conduits B, and perforated top a, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
