Description

PATENT QFFTCE.
EDMUND EVERETT, OF WALPOLE, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN FIRE-KINDLERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 133,973, dated December 17, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDMUND EVERETT, of Walpole, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements on Prepared Fire- Kindlers, of which the following is a specifb' cation: 4
My invention relates to improvements on prepared iire-kindlers and the process in which the same are manufactured; and consists in solid pieces of wood dipped and soaked in a mixture of turpentine and varnish, after which they are dipped in resin and coated with sawdust, in a manner as will now be shown and described.
On the drawing, Figure lis a perspective view of myk improved fire-kindler, and Fig. 2 is a section ofthe same.
The object of my invention is to produce a iire-kindler that will ignite easily and keep burning a suicient length of time so as to set re to the wood or coal that is used as a fuel.
My invention consists of an ordinary small piece of light wood, a, that is first coated with a mixture of turpentine and varnish, b, after which it is coated with resin c, and
nally covered with sawdust d, as shown on the drawing.
The process by which I manufacture my rekindler is as follows: I out the wood in suitable small pieces, either square or otherwise, as may be convenient, and soak them for a few minutes in a mixture of about equal parts of turpentine and varnish, that Will penetrate the wood and make it very iniiammable. After being soaked in the turpentine and varnish I place the pieces of wood in resin so as' to' make them still more inflammable, after which I cover them with sawdust so as to obtain a greater surface to ignite, and also for the purpose of preventing the kindlers from sticking together when packed up for use or transportation.
By this process I am able to make a very iniiammable fire-kindler. At the same time it is very cheap, as I can use any Waste pieces of wood-such as shingles, clapboards, &c.
for the foundation of my improved fire-kindler.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I Wish to secure by Letters Patent, and claim, is-
Coating with sawdust the fire-kindler, as herein described, for the purpose of increasing the surface thereof and preventing it from sticking together when packed, as fully set forth and described.
, EDMUND EVERETT.
