APPLICATION FILED JAN- 7, I920. 1,339,510. at ted May 11, 1920.
2 SHEETS-SHEET 2.
Q-vwuktot To all whom itmay conrcrn:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM A. Horr- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Air Blowers and Distributers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in apparatus for generating and applying warm and cold air to the body.
The object of the invention is to provide an apparatus of the above type which is simple in its mode of operation and eiiective in its application asshall more fully appear from the description to follow in connection with the accompanying drawings.
Referring to said drawings in general terms. Figure 1 is a diagrammatic view of the apparatus, including the air-blower, the conducting tubes, cap or hood, and cross connection. Fig. 2 is a top'plan view of the blower. Fig. 3 is a section of the generator on the line 3 -3 of Fig. 2, Fig. -l a view showing the inside of the hood or cap. Fig. 5 is a section of the same on line 5 of Fig. i, Fig. (3, is a view of the same on line G 6 of Fig. 4;. Fig. 7 is a section of the cross connection on the line 'T '7 of Fig. 1. Fig. 8 is a section of both members of the cross connection taken on the line U oi Fig. 7 and Fig. S) is a section taken on the line 9- -9 of Fig. 7.
In a more particular description of the invention similar reference characters indicate the same parts in the several views of the drawings.
The apparatus comprises a blower lwhich is located in the middle of an oblong casing 2 which tapers toward each end. The ends are thus made smaller and are inclosed and provided with restricted outlets -3 or nipples over which flexible con ductor tubes 1 fit.
The said casing is supported on a base 5- and the blower l has its shaft 6 extended out and coupled with an electric motor 7 which constitutes the driving medium for the blower. The said' Specification of Letters Patent.
.tion of the cross connection 13-.

be supplied with ice or any other cooling medium to cool the air passing through that end of said casing l-. The said cooling case -10- has a cover 12 which renders the interior of said casing accessible for supplying the necessary cooling medium.
The air thus generated, heated and cooled is conveyed to the )lace or places of application through the exible tubes 4: which connect with one side of a cross connection 13 as shown in Fig. -9, and similar flexible tubes -l-:t which connect with the other side of said cross connection. Thesaid cross connection has passages --l5 and 16 through it for the passage of the heated air and cooled air. It consists of two semi-spherical parts .l7- and 18' which are united by a central bolt -19-. In the face of one member cavities 20 are provided for the entrance of a ball 2l'- which serves to yieldingly lock the two parts when the said parts are in a position in which the passages -l5- l6--- register as shown in Fig. 9. The ball -21 is pressed by a spring -22 inserted in a recess in one member of the cross connection. It will be readily seen that by turning one half of the cross connection 13 'the pas sage of the heated and cooled air may be reversed. In the drawings I have shown a cap 2I- as one means of applying the air from the blower. This cap is place-cl over the head of a person to be relieved, for example, .of headache. The intcric t the said cap is divided by a partition to prevent the heated air applied to one side from too freely mixing with the cool air applied to the other side. In Fig. 1 the broken lines indicate the reversed position of the flexible tubes i due to turning of a por- The cap -23 is provided with nipples 25-- for the attachment of the ends of the flexible tubes -1a-, and openings or vents 2(3 are also provided in said cap.
It will he understood that the cap 23 is only one means for applying the heated and cooled air alternately. Other means for applying it readily suggest themselves, such for example as a comb with a hollow back and teeth or prongs for the passage of the air. A comb the prongs or teeth of which may in a like manner be hollow, a collar for the neck, and a variety of pads to be applied to various parts of the body may be utilized for applying the air at different temperatures. Illustrations of such devices are not deemed necessary, nor is it thought that more than a brief mention oi the various instruinen'talities required.
llaving describtal claim 1. In an apparatus tor supplying alternately, warm and cool air, an oblong casing with openings in the sides thereof and the ends oi" which gradually decrease in area, and are provided with restricted outlets a heating element inclosing one end of said casing and cooling means inclosing the other end, a revolving l'an mounted centrally in said casing, and flexible air distributing tubes connected with the restricted openings in the ends of said casing.
2. In an apparatus for supplying air at different temperatures, a casing extended in tapered ends which are closed and have restricted outlets, one of said ends being surrounded by a heating element and the other by a cooling chamber, a blower in said my invention l asing, flexible air distributing tubes connected with the restricted openings in the ends of said casing, a cross connection to which said tubes are also connected, and
other flexible distributing tubes communicating with said first named tubes through said cross connection, said cross connection being adapted to reverse the direction of the air passing therethrough.
:..In an apparatus for supplying air at dill'erent temperatures, a casing extended in tapered ends, said ends being inclosed and provided with restricted outlets, a heating element inclosing one end of said casing and a cooling chamber surroumling the other end, flexible distributing tubes connected with said openings, a cross connection to which said tubes are connected, said cross connection consisting of two parts with air passages extending therethrough, one of said parts being movable relative to the other to reverse the discharge of air-therethrough, other flexible air tubes connected to the nonmovable part of said cross connection, and means adapted to be applied to the body and into which air of different temperatures is discharged through the last named flexible air tubes.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
