FLAT-IRON.
' i To all whom it may concern 'Be-it-known that I, SHINTAR'O Kano, a
subject'of the Emperor of Japan, residing in the city and county of San Francisco and state of California, have invented new and useful .Improvem'entsin Fla'tJrons, of which the followingis a specification;
-'This invention relates tolflat irons, and particularly to an electrically 'heated iron provided with means for generating steam and properly applying the same to the gar- 1 ment or other article being pressed. f One of the-objects of the invention is to provide an iron of the character described which is simple, substantial .,and compact and is so arranged that the steam generating and heating elements are all housed 'com- -pactly withinthe iron structure.
- Further objects will hereinafter appear. I The, invention consists as hereinafter more fully described and construction and combination of parts f claimed, having reference to the accompany drawings, in which-- F igl,1re 1 {is 'a central vertical section. jithro'ugh the iron. Fig, 2is aplan view of' the bottom or facing plate of the iron.-
' the 80 More particularly described, A indicates main body of the iron which is cored out to form achamber 2 in which is suitably mounted a plurality of heating elecoils may -'be constructed any suitable manner and insulated with re-, lation to the iron proper. a Secured to the iron, by screws 5 or other 'means, is a housing 6 in which is formed a m, centrai steam'generating chamber 7. Mount" means' of a suitable form cured to the bottom tion A of the iron, I a facing plate 14, and formed on theinner side of said ments 3 which are connected with a suitable source of electric current supplied through of plug connection, such asindicated at and mounted ined on the housing. 6 and suitably secured to same, as at 8, is a needle valve 9 to which hater 'may be delivered through a flexible hoseconnection 10 or the like. Mounted on the lower end jofthe needle valve and pro ]ecting into, chamber 7 is a nozzle 11, in the the combination with the mam body section lower e'ndof which'is formed a. plurality ofv of themain body seeby means of screws 13, 1s
plate is a-lon'gitudinally disposed groove' 15 from which; radiate a plurality of transversely disposed grooves 16.- Connecting the main groove 15 with chamopen the needle of the parts, and

her 7 is a steam conducting pipe 17, and formed in'the with the grooves 16, are perforations 18. In operation,- the like where a certain amount of moisture is needed, it is only necessary to slightly mitted to nozzle 11 and discharges therethrough in the form of her 7 where it is immediately generated into steam which is permitted to escape through pipe 17 into the grooves 15 and 16 formed in the facing plate 14. It is here permitted to escape through perforations 18. The steam is thus evenly to the garment or other article to'be pressed; the amount of steam applied being'regul'ated by the needle valve 9.
The provisionof the electrically operated heating elements not only transmits the desired temperature to the face plate 14, but
also supplies sufiicient heat'to chamber 7 to .generate the required ordesired amount of steam The iron. is otherwise simple and compact in construction and is easily handled and adjusted when in operation as a slight turn of the needle valve in one (11- rection or the other will vary the amount of steam generated.
when. pressing garments or,
a spray into chamand properly applied faceplate 14, in alinement valve 9. Water is thus ad- A packing and insulating-plate 19 is preferably interposed between the main body of the iron.- and the housing 6 to form the proper protection for the heating elements. The materials and finish of the several parts of the iron .are such as the experience and judgment of the manufacturer may dictate.
I wish it understood that various changes in form, proportions and details of construe tion may be'resorted to within the scope of the appended claims and that I do not wish to. limit myself to the specific design and construction here shown.
Having thus described my invent1on, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Pat ent is 1.' In a flat-iron of the character described,
having an electrically operatedheating elementmounted interiorly thereof, of'a housverse steam discharging passages formed on its inner side and a plurality of perforations formed in its face commumcating with the transverse grooves, means for admitting the combination with the main body' section having an electrically operated heating element mounted interiorly thereof, of a housing secured to the body section, said hous-' ing having a steam generating chamber formed therein, a facing plate secured'to the body section, said facing plate having a longitudinal and a plurality of connected trans verse stearndischarging passages formed on its'inner side and a plurality of perforations formed on its face communicating with the transverse grooves, a needle valve mounted 2 on the housing, a spray nozzle connected with the needle valve and-projecting into the steam generating chamber,andfa pipe forming communication between the steam chamber and the longitudinal "and connected '25 transverse steam discharging passages.
In testimony whereof I havehereunto set '1 my hand in the-presence of two subscribing Witnesses. s
