To all whom t may concerti Be it known that I, KENT E. LYMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in thel county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in' Self-Filling Grease-Guns, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to grease guns andv has for its main object to provide a grease gun of simple construction which is selfilling and will expel grease and like s ubstances used for lubricating purposes.
lVith 'the above and other objects in view as will be readily understood, the invention will be hereinafter fully described in connection with the accompanying` drawings, and the novel features thereof will be distinctly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings similar characters of reference are used to designate corresponding parts.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a grease gun constructed according tomy invention, the plunger being at thel nozzle end of the gun,
Fig. 2 is a similar view, the plunger being at the opposite or rear end of the gun,
Fig. 3 is a sectional. view illustrating the plunger mounted upon the operating screw, Fig. 4 is a front View of the conveyer, and F ig. 5 is an end view of Fig. 4.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents a4 tubular body, the front end of which is closed by a removable cover 2 and the rear end by a cap 3. The cover 2 is provided with a central opening 4 from which extends a nozzle Arranged within the body and extending longitudinally thereof is a left hand threaded screw 6, the rear end 0f which is rotatably mounted in a central4 opening 7 of the cap 3. The handle 8 is fixed to the projecting rear end of the screw 6 for rotating the same, and said handle and a cotter pin 9 passing through the screw at the inner side of the cap 3 prevent longitudinal movement of said screw. Slidably mounted within the body 1 is a plunger 10 consisting of a pair of leather disks 11 and 12, which are held between a washer 13 and a stop plate 14 on a sleeve 15 by means of a nut 16. The sleeve 15 is correspondingly threaded to receive the screw 6, and the rotating of the screw will cause the plunger to travel thereon. A pair of rearwardly eX- tending feet 17 and 18 formed integrally with the stop plate 14 are adapted to engage the inner side of the cap 3 for limiting the rearward movement of the plunger 10, and indentations 19 and 20 near the forward end of the body 1 are adapted to limit the travel of the plunger in that direction. The screw 6 terminates at the forward end of the body 1, and lfixed thereto is a conveyer 21, which consists of a plurality of sector shapedI blades 22 having straight front edges 23 lying in thel transverse plane and rearwardly turned up corners 24 leaving straight rear edges 25 extending therefrom-t0 the transverse plane of said front edges. By making the conveyer' blades as described, the blades have a concave rear face 26 and a convex front face 27. The turning of the conveyer to the left will cause the front edges 23 of the blades to cut into grease, and it will be drawn into the vbody 1 by the curvedrear faces 26 of the blades acting thereupon. the saine time, the plunger 10 will travel rearwardly due to the action of the screw 6 upon the sleeve 15, and thus allow the grease to fill the body. When the screw 6 is turned to the right, the plunger 10 will be yforced toward the forward end of the body 1, thereby forcing the grease out of the nozzle 5, and at the same time, the conveyer 21 will turn to the right, and the rear edges 25 of its blades will cut into the grease andthe action of their front curved faces 27 will' aid in forcing the grease out of the nozzle.
In order to lill the body 1,-the cover 2 is removed, the plunger 10 is moved to the forward end thereof, and the open end of the body is forced into a pail of grease. By turning the handle 8 to the left, the screw 6 is rotated to the left, thereby turning the conveyer 21 to the left to draw in the grease, and at the same time, the plunger 10 is moved Vto the rear end of the body until the feet 17 and 18strike the cap 3. To expel the grease, the handle 8 is turned to the right thereby forcing ther plunger 1Q forwardly and also rotating the conveyer 21 to the right, and as the front curved faces 27 of its blades act upon the grease, the conveyer assists the plunger in forcing the grease out of the nozzle.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a grease gun, the combination of a body, a conveyer for drawing grease into the body, a plunger for forcing the grease out of the body, and common means 'for operating theconveyer and the plunger, substantially as described.
2. In a grease gun, the combination of a body, a screw, a conveyer fixed to the screw, a plunver mounted upon the screw, and means .or operating the screw whereby the conveyer will draw grease into the body and p the plunger will move to allow grease to enter the body, substantially as described.
3. In a grease gun, the combination of a body, a threaded screw, a conveyer fixed to the screw, a plunger operated by the screw, and a handle for operating the screw in either direction, whereby when the screw is turned in one direction the conveyer will draw grease into the body and the plunger with the plunger, the stop plate having feet for limiting the movement of the plunger, and means for operating the screw whereby the conveyer will draw grease into the body and the plunger will move to allow grease to enter the body until said stop plate limits the movement thereof, substantially as described.
In a grease gun, the combination of a body, a screw, a conveyer fixed to the screw, the conveyer having blades, the `blades having rear concave faces and front convex faces, a plunger operated by the screw, and y a handle for operating the screw in one directlon whereby the conveyer will draw grease into the body and the plunger will move rearwardly to allow grease to enter the body and for operating the screw in the other direction to force the plunger forward to expel the grease and turn the conveyer so that the front convex faces of its blades will assist in expelling the grease, substantially as described.
