PERCY WHITE, OF ATI-IOL, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO L. MORSE 8ck SONS, OF AT1-IOL, MASSACHUSETTS.,
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, Planer WHITE, a citizen of the United States, residingat Athol in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have inventeda new and useful Corner -Brace for Tables, &c., of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to corner braces for tables and other furniture, the object of the invention being to provide a corner brace which will rigidly brace the corners of the table and also serve as a connection for the table leg.
A further object of the invention is to provide a corner brace of this character which may be adjusted vertically so that all of the legs of the table will rest squarely on the floor even should the floor be uneven in places, which may be securely held in an adjusted position by lowering or raising of the leg or legs when accurately adjusted, and in which the parts are held from displacement or disconnection.
Another object of the invention is to provide a corner block or brace of this character which is simple in construction, which consists of few parts, and which may be manufactured and sold at a minimum cost.
With the above and other general objects in mind the invention consists of combinations of elements, constructions and arrangements, and general assemblage, the details of which will be hereinafter fully enlarged upon and recited in the subjoined claims, the invention being illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein Figure 1 is a bottom plan of the invention applied to a table, parts of the latter being broken away.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the table top and associated parts, and
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the brace.
Referring in detail to the drawing, wherein like characters of reference designate like parts on all of the views, the numerals 5 and designate a pair of horizontal side bars of a table or any other piece of furniture and are provided with dovetailed grooves in their opposed faces which extend almost the entire width of these side rails but are closed at one end thereof, these grooves being indicated at 7.
The corner brace consists of a block 10 having its opposite ends beveled toward each other` as indicated at 11 so as to contact specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed J'u 1y-12`.4 1919. Serial-No. 310,343.
-Patented Apr. 27, 1920.
with the inner faces of the rails 5 and G. Eormed' at these ends 11 of the block and extending atY right-angles to the longitudinal axisv ofl the block are rounded tongues` l12V whichV fit snugly within "the grooves 7 and are held from displacement by the closed ends of the grooves, which ends are spaced from the bottom edges of the bars.
One of the table legs is designated at 13 and is disposed between the transverse ends of the rails 6 and 7, theseV ends frictionally engaging the adjacent faces of this table leg and held in such position by the screws 14 which pass diagonally through the rails 5 and 6 and cause the same to bind against this table leg. An additional fastening for the leg 13 is provided which extends transversely through the block 10 and is engaged in the leg and is designated at 15, thus securely holding the leg in an adjusted position, when the same is raised or lowered.
Due to the fact that the tongues 12 are slightly shorter than the groove 7 it will be seen that should the table be resting upon :in uneven base, the binding screws are loosened and then the block will be free to slide longitudinally thus allowing the leg to rest evenly on the floor or base after which it is tightened.
This construction is considered the preferred embodiment of the invention but it will be understood that the same may be modified and altered in many respects and that my limits of such modication are governed only by what is claimed.
What is claimed is 1. The combination with a table including a top and side rails rigidly secured thereto at right angles to each other; of a leg of rectangular cross section having two sides abutting the ends of the rails and having the outer faces thereof Hush with the outer faces of the rails and the inner corner thereof projecting between said rails, said rails having vertical dovetailed grooves therein communicating with their upper having faces in contact with the inner' faces of the rails at either side of said projections, and a fastening member extending through the block and into the leg at the corner portion thereof.
2. In a corner brace for tables, the combination with a table including a top and side walls rigidly secured thereto; of a leg having two sides abutting the ends ofthe rails and the inner corner thereof projecting between said rails, said rails having vertical dovetailed grooves therein communicating with their upper edges and terminating at spaced distances from their lower edges, a block extending diagonally between said rails adjacent the corner of the leg, said block having its ends formed with vertical dovetailed projections adapted to engagethe grooves in the rails for vertical adjustment therein, and clamping means between 20 the block and leg whereby'to bind said parts in adjustedposition.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my sigua- F. F. MORSE, S. I1. MORSE.l
