W. P. DORL. DOOR CONT'ROLLING APPARATUS. `APPLICATION FILED FEB.26,1919.
Patented Apr. 27, 1920.

WALTER P. DORL, OF IETROIT, MICHIGAN.
no0R-colvcmomms APPARATUS.
To all whom t may concern;V j p Be it known that I, WALTER P. DoRL, a citizen of the United States, residin lat Detroit, county of Wayne, State of Mlchigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Door- Controlling Apparatus, and declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled inthe art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification. Y
My invention relates to door closing apparatus for automobiles and an object of my improvements is to provide an improved device for door checks of an automobile which may be cheaply constructed, easily applied and when so applied will be concealed from View, hold the door open in one position and automatically close the door on a slight movement.
I secure this object in the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which automobile illustrating the application there` to of the apparatus embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a section on the broken line 2-2 Fig. 3.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the casing, the horizontal portion of the cover being cut away and removed.
Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4--4 Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5-5 Fig. 3.
Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of one of the holding parts.
Fig. 7 is a perspective view of thev crosshead or yoke.
Fig. 8 is a representation of the mechanism for holding the door open.
a is the body frame and b designates the doors. The apparatus embodying .my invention is secured either to the frame or tol the door as will be obvious without special explanation to those skilled in the art. In either case the strap j is secured ata point jz to the other part from that to which the casing c is secured. The opening of the door draws the strap j out .of the casing which motion is resiliently resisted by springs within the casing and said springs act to retract the strap and vclose the door.
The casing c is made up of a portion havspecification of Letters Patent. Patented Apr.-27, 1920. Application mea February 2s, 19,19. serial No. 279,244.
ing the bottom c2, and the upwardly extending rear end 05, its front end being open, eX- cept for the lugs 03a formed by the upturned edges of the-bottom c2 of the first mentioned part.
There are guide rods d d in the casing o extending longitudinally thereof and parallel to each other, one of said rods being adjacent to each of the casing sides. There is a yoke, or cross-head, f having lugs f2 2 at each end which lugs are provided with apertures f5 j fitting over the rods al and adapted to slide thereon. VThe yoke f is bent at. right angles in two parallel portions a short distance from its ends, the outer end of these portions being joined by the integral bar f3. d? d2 are springs threaded upon the rods and acting tov force the yoke f to its innermost position.` A strap j isv looped around the bar f3 to secure it to the yoke f and extends along the casing and out at the open end ofthe same, the end of said strap being secured by screws ja. e3 e3a are two U-shaped pieces adapted to fit against the lugs 03a with the ends of their branches resting against said lugs. Each of said lugs is provided with an aperture c* in which one end of the rod d engages, the other end of said rod passes through an aperture in the upturned end c5 of the bottom of the casing c. Each of the U-pieces es is provided with an aperture e2 in which a rod la engages, the ends of said rods being adjacent to the sides of the casing. L is a sleeve upon the rod it between the ltwo U-pieces 63a 63a and forming a friction roller over which the strap j passes.
The casing is secured to the frame-work by screws o9 through stop blocks 08 and through the bottom o2. In various positions in the line of travel of the yoke f apertures @salare formed vertically through the bottom of the casing c and screws or bolts ob engage through these apertures. These bolts may be placed in any of these aperhinged edge of the angles to the body of the car the lug j is drawn over the roller h and assumes the position shown in Fig. 8. This lug holds the strap j from being retracted byv the spring so long as the door is in the position substantially as shown in Fig. 1. A slight movement of the door inward would release the lug from the roller 7L and allow the roller to pass over the tip 'i2 and the spring to act in the manner hereinbefore describedto close the door. Y
The method of assembling and using the above described apparatus is as follows:
The yoke f being threaded upon the rods Zand the springs d2 placed thereon, a part right e3abeing placed upon each of the rods d a' spring d2 engaging a part 63a and against a lug f2 of the yoke The rod L is inserted in place, the ends of the rods CZ are passed through the apertures in the ends c5 of the casing c and the parts @Sit are placed within the casing engaging against the lugs c3 which are turned up from the bottom c2 of the casing so as to hold the parts e firmly in place. The casing is then secured, say, to the frame of the machine adjacent to the door and the outer end of the strap j is secured to the door.V Now, when the door is opened the strap y' will be drawn outward carrying the yoke f along with it against the action of the'springs d2 and'when the door is released said springs will force the yoke f back to its inner position drawing the door to its closed position. The casingeis covered by the body lining as indicated in Fig. l at z.
What I claim is: In an apparatus of the Ykind described, the combination of a door, a jamb to which said door is pivotally attached, a ilexible strap attached to said door at one end of said strap, resilient means secured to said j amb and operating by said strap to vclose the door, av friction roller over which said strappasses when the door is opened, means on said. strap adapted to Yengage said roller and prevent the retraction of said strap and closing of said door whensaid door is .at an angle with the jamb said engaging means being adapted to be released from said roller permitting said door to be closed.
In testimony whereof, I sign this specification.
