TRUSS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 27, 1920.
Application filed October 29, 1819. Serial No. 334,143.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMns WILLIAM Boon- LEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at VVeatherford, in the county of Parker and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Truss, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to trusses or abdominal belts and theobject thereof is to improve and simplify the construction of devices of this character and to provide the same with pads which are carried by the belt or truss and arranged adjust-ably in such a way as to permit proper conformation of the devices to the abdomen or body so as to serve its function in regard to the affected parts.
A further object of the invention is to provide means for adjusting the truss or belt and -novel means to adjust the front pads thereof.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the com-' blnation and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings z- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved truss in applied position.
Fig. 2 is a plan view.
Fig. 3 is a front elevation, and F ig. 4c is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
eferring to the drawings in detail, my
improved truss or abdominal belt is shown as comprising a body encircling member including an angular intermediate or front section 10 the extremities of which are directed downwardly or at an angle with respect thereto in arcuate formation. The end portions are enlarged and provided with longitudinal slots 11 which are of concavoconvex crosssection with the convexed faces disposed inwardly. The extremities are ofl"- set downwardly as shown at 12 and to these extremities are detachably secured as by means of alined threaded openings and fastening screws 13, a pair of spring metal strips 14: which are normally of circular contour t At the free ends of the strips 14; which are adapted to encircle the body in conjunction with the intermediate or rear section 10 and to pass around the sides of the abdomen with said ends disposed at the rear of the body are arranged pads 15 which are sub stantially pear-shaped and disposed with their convexed sides inwardly, their outer sides being dished or concaved as shown at 16 except for a projection 17 extending from the narrow end or stem thereof to permit attachment of the free extremities in the sections 14 detachably as by means of screws 18 and relatively convexed to properly fit or conform to the body and permit free move ment thereof.
One of the screws of the fastening means of each pad 15 is provided with a headed button 19 adapted to be engaged by the slotted apertures 20 of a strap or connector 21 thereby rendering the device readily attachable or detachable and permitting adjustment of the truss or belt to different persons or to permit adjustment of the application of the pads against the body as it is thought it will be readily understood.
At the front of the belt, there are dis poser pads 22 preferably tapering upwardly in thickness or vertical cross-section as shown in Fig. 4: of the drawings, said pads 22 being substantially rectangular when viewed face-wise. Each of these pads is provided with a vertical recess 23 terminating at spaced distances from the upper and lower edges thereof and embedded in the bottom wall of each recess is a plate 24 removably secured as by means of screws 25 between'which is received a clamping screw 26. Engaged in each recess is a slotted tongue 27 the slot extending longitudinally thereof intermediately of its width so as to permit vertical adjustment by means of the clamping member 26 while the lower end of the member is formed with a circular enlargement or body portion 28 centrally pro vided with a threaded aperture and having at its outer face a concaved block 29 conforming to the convexed face of the ends of the rear section 10 at the slot 11. A clamping head 30 is disposed against the cone caved side at each slot and a screw 31 engages through the head, slot and with the block or body so as to clamp the pad in any desired position or adjustment,
It will thus be seen that the pads 22 are supported for adjustment and since the tongues are bent outwardly from the body portions or enlargements, the pads will extend upwardly and outwardly to properly fit the body, while the adjustment features mentioned will greatly facilitate the application and manner of the device.
Having thus described the invention, What is claimed is 1. A truss comprising a body encircling member, a relatively arcuate member at the front of the body and comprising a portion of said body encircling member, pads at the rear of said member, said arcuate member being provided with spaced longitudinal slots near the ends thereof and said arcuate member being of concavo-convex cross-section at said slotted portions, pads disposed adjacent to said slots and provided with a vertical recess in the outer face of each, said pads tapering in cross-section vertically with the thickest portions at the bottom, slotted strips engaged in said recesses and having enlargements at their lower ends, clamping means engaged through the slots of the strips and with the clamps, and clamping means connecting the enlarged lowered portions of the strips through the slots to permit horizontal adjustment of the pads toward and V and said away from each other in angular relation, slotted strips permitting vertical adjustment of the padsin converging rela tion.
2. A truss or abdominal belt comprising asheet metal front section of angular formation having spaced longitudinal slots and having a concavo-convexed cross section at said slots, tongues having head portions, clamping means engaged through said slots and with the head portions to permit longitudinal adjustment in said slots, pads, means to connect said pads to the tongues for vertical adjustment, resilient end sections in the form of strips detachably secured to the ends of the front or intermediate section, pads detachably secured to the extremities of said end sections, and an adjustable connection between the extremities of said end sections. j
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JAMES WILLIAM BUGKLEY.
