Description
C. HOLM.
EXFANSIBLE CORE.
APPLICATION FILED Nov.1o, 19|9.
1,337,910. Patented Apr. 20,1920.v
'lllllllll Slrlllllit rior ` with the vulcanizing of tire casings or the lilre, and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character wherein the expanding members of the core coact with an external pad of yielding or compressible material, whereby a casing or a portion thereof?, to be vulcanized7 is placed under equal pressure on all sides, and with requisite compensation made for all high and low places which may be upon the inside of the ci ing.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved Core of this general character comprising a main` arcuate body having members threaded therethrough for endwise movement, and wherein the outer ends of said members are in swivel engagement with an expanding shoe overlying the outer or tread portion of the main members.
in additional object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved devise of this general character wherein a sr glemental shoe overlies the inner portion of. th main member of the core, and which is tirely detached therefrom.
Furthermore it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved expansible core for use in connection with the vulcanizing of a tire casing whereby the use of air bags now generally employeth may be dispensed with, etc.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved espa-lisible core whereby certain iniportant advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use. as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
rllhe novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
*D e 1- ,s fr@ Pwr i atein ed rior. en, ramo.
in order that my invention may be the better understoodq il will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings. wherein:
Figure l is a view par-ly in sertion and partly in side elevation of enpansible eore constructed. in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;
2 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 2 2 of Fin'. i.. and,
. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken s. tially on the line 3 Fig. i.
As disclosed in the accomilianying drawings, M denotes the main member of my improved core. and which member is preferably tubular and longitudinally cur in accordance with the requirements of praetice.
'.he wall of the member ld adjacent the opposite ends thereof is provided with the diametrically opposed openings Q', and
through which opposed openings is loosely d'rected the elongated sha ks il. aeh of the shanlrs 3 is threaded through a member or nut l positioned within the bore of the member lai, and 'of a sise and configuration whereby the same is 'held' against rotary movement.
denotes au outer or tread shoe of a length sulostL 'i ly equal to the length of main me, and which is curved longitudinally and transversely for contact throughout its length with the adjacent or outer portion of the niei'nh-er El,
end poLtions or the shui i' i r L 1 L swr laminations T be produced irom discarded inner tubes, because in practice such laminations after the device has been used a few times, will gradually become vulcanized into almost a solid mass, although the padding operates equally Well Whether the laminations are separate or united.
rllhe operation of the de lvice is believed to be obvious from the foregoing description, although it might be Well to state that by requisite rotation of the shanlrs 3, the shoe S Will be moved aivay'irom the main membe M and thus torce and expand the padding P against the inside ot the casing, resulting in equal pressure on all sides of the casing, and at the same time compensating for all high or low places yhich may be upon the inside et' the casing.
yin practice it has been demonstrated that a core constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention is substantially indestructible, as the only part which Wears out is the padding l?, and this can be renewed at a very slight expense.
Another decided advantage oi the present invention is the provision in the padding P whereby discarded or Worn out inner tubes can be employed, as use is given to material Which otherwise has been generally considered Worthless.
lt is believed to be bvious that with the use oi the present device it is unnecessary to employ the air bags, as is now generally done, as it has been firmly established in actual practice that the present device can be used With much better results than that obtained by the use of air bags.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that an expansible core constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly Well adapted for use by reason oi' the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and oper ated and it Will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modiiication Without departing from the principles and spirit thereof, and for this reason I do not Wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
l claim:
l. An expansible core for use in connection with the vulcanizing of tire casings comprising a main arcuate member, Yineinbers disposed through and in threaded enwith which the second named members are in swivel engagement.
2. An expe-risible core for use in connec-Y tion with the rulcanizing of tire casings comprising aniain arcuate member, members disposed through and in threaded engagement with the opposite end portion of said main member, a slioeroverlying the outer portion of the main member, and with which the second named members are in g gement, and a padding of yielding vmateriai substantially surrounding the main member and the shoe.
3. in enpansible corfor use in conneotion with the vulcanizing of tire casings comprisinga main arcuate member, members disposed through ano in threaded engagement with the opposite end portion oi said main member, shoe overlying the outer portion of the main member, and with which the second named members are in swivel eneagement, Vpadding oi' ing material subst l Jantiaily surro main member and the shoe, and shoe overlying the inner portion or" the main member. i
1iin eiiiansible core for use in connection with the vulcanizing of tire casings comprising a main arcuate member, mem-` bers eisposed through and in threaded engagement with the opposite end portion of said main member, a shoe overlying the outer portion oi the main member, and with which the second named members are in swivel engagement, pending of yielding material substantially surroundino' the main member and the shoe, and a second shoe overlyingthe inner portion or" the main member, and separate there-trom.
5. ln combination With an exioansible core of the class described, a yieldaole padding surrounding said core.
ln combination with an expansible core i cembed, a yieldable iaddin.' i ouin-Ling s Ycore, said paddn prising superimposed laminations.
In testimony iv iereof l hereunto aliiX my signature.
