J. A. SPEAKS.
SMOKE FLUE.

Jaw/7w gmve 'mtoz UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN A. SPEAKS, 0F STELLA, MISSOURI.
SMOKE-FLUE.
Application filed March 4, 1918.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JoHN A. SPEAKS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stella, in the county of Newton and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Smoke-Flues, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in lines, and the primary object of the invention is to provide a smoke flue adapted to be positioned in the top of a chimney or smoke stack, and which devlce, when in operation will greatly increase the suction and cause a better draft, as well as forming a rain shield and also preventing any likelihood of a down draft.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is easily and simply constructed, inexpensive to manufacture, and one which will be very efiicient in operation.
lVith these and numerous other objects in view, my invention consists of the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts which will be herein referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claim.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device, and
Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the same.
In describing my invention, I shall refer to the drawings in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The numeral 1 designates the body of the smoke flue attachment which consists of a pair of opposed walls 2 connected by a pair of walls 2*. The walls 2 are provided with inwardly directed flanges 8= which are riveted or otherwise securely attached to the interposed walls 2, thereby forming a rigid four-walled structure.
The terminals of the walls at the relatively large end of the body are extended a distance beyond the walls 2 to provide anchoring members 3 adapted for insertion in the chimney or smoke stack and supporting lips 4 are struck out from the material of the extended terminals of the walls 2 and Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 20, 1920.
Serial No. 220,318.
lie in the horizontal plane of the lower terminals of the walls 2 whereby the attachment is supported in operative position.
The inclined converging side walls of the body 1 terminate in an opening 5 at the top thereof, and said inclined walls are provided with longitudinally spaced stamped out shutter sections 6 that extend upwardly and inwardly as shown at 7, at approximately the same angle. These stamped out shutter sections will form draft openings, and it is in the novel arrangement and p0- sitioning of the shutter sections that the advantages derived from this device are obtained.
In operation, when the flue attachment is positioned in the top of a chimney or smoke stack, the draft openings, combined with the shutter sections, will greatly increase the suction or draft and owing to the novel positioning thereof, that is, the shutter sections extend inwardly at approximately the same angle, and upwardly, there will be no possibility of rain driving into the device, and also the possibility of a down draft is likewise overcome. his device is very easily constructed as the shutter sections are formed integral, by stamping out the side walls of the body of the device as is clearly illustrated and described.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought that a clear and comprehensive understanding of the construction, operation, and advantages of my invention may be had, and while I have'shown and described the device as embodying a specific structure, I desire that it be understood that such changes may be made in said structure, as do not depart from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim is new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
A flue comprising a plurality of walls arranged to provide a hollow body, inwardly directed flanges carried by two of the opposed walls rigidly connected with the intermediate walls, said flanged walls being extended a distance beyond the intermediate walls at one terminal to provide anchoring members adapted for insertion in a chimney or smoke stack and lips struck out from theextended portions of the flanged Walls eX- stack and maintain the flue in position thereon, and longitudinally spaced transversely disposed shutter portions struck out from the walls and extending upwardly and in- 10 1 Wardly Within the flue.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature hereto.
JOHN A. SPEAKS.
