IMPROVEMENT IN ANIMAL-P OKES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 133,765, dated December I0, 1872.
4 I do hereby declare that the following is a full,
clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon which form a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of au animalpoke, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilledy in the art to which `my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure lis a perspective view, and Fig. 2 an end view, of my improved animal-poke.
4A represents the stale, provided with the head B, and G is the bow which goes over the animals neck. Upon the stale` A is placed a metal socket, D, secured by a screw, land provided on each side with an arm or pin, b.
Upon each of these pins is placed loosely a casting, E, which is grooved on the outside longitudinally to receive theend ot' the bow C, which is fastened by abolt andnut, d, said bolt passing through a slot in the casting so that the bow can be lengthened and .shortened at will. One of the castings E is prevented from coming off of its 4pin b by any suit- B is placed a pushlbar, G, havingits ends bent downward along the sides of the head. These ends of the push-bar G are slotted, and work on pins in the ends of the head B. From the under side of the push-bar G project two or more sharppointed pins or teeth, f f, which pass through holes in the head B, and each of which is surrounded by a spiral spring, c, between the push-bar and the upper side of the head. These springs throwthe barG up above the head, the distance of the slots in its ends causing the sharp points ofthe pins f f to bc drawn within the head B; but whenever the animal goes near a fence, the front end of the sta-le catching in the same, the pressure of the bow causes the pins to project lbeyond the head and prick the animal, causing it draw back till the pressure is removed.
Having thus fully described myinvention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure b v l. In an animal-poke, the castings E E, grooved and slotted, as described, to receive and hold the `ends of the bow at any desired point, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. In combination with the stale andbow of an animalpoke, the socket D having pins b b, and the castings E E, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
3. In combination with the hea-d and bow ot an animal-poke, the continuous push-bar G having its ends bent downward, slotted, and Working on pins in the ends of the head, the teeth fj', and springs c c, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix mysignaturein presence of two witnesses. A
THEODOBE J. DIOKERSON. Witnesses:
