WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 20, 1920.
Application filed larch 21, 1919. Serial No. 284,102.
'Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in wrenches and has for its object to provide a wrench having a cam controlled movable aw.
Another object of the invention is to provide a wrench having a cam controlled m'ovable jaw, said cam having means thereon for limiting the movement of said jaw.
V With the above and other objects in view, I have invented the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure l is a sectional elevational view of my improved wrench.
Fig. 2 is an edge view thereof.
Like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the following specification and in the views in the drawings in which 1 indicates a shank having one side of one end terminating in a fixed jaw 2, the other side 5 of said end having an inclined groove 3 with an enlarged inner part 4, said groove extending entirely through said side 5 and said fixed jaw 2. The side 5 has inclined plane surfaces 6 and 7 upon which a movable jaw 8 seats and is slidable, said jaw 8 having a tongue 9 with an enlarged T- head 10 which operates slidably in the groove The tongue 9 extends inwardly of the jaw 8 to form a shank 11 which is adapted to slide into the extension 12 of the groove 3, in said fixed jaw and which also forms one of the three walls or nut engaging surfaces of the wrench jaws.
The enlarged part 4 of the groove or slot 3 extends into the shank to form a pocket 13 in which is pivoted a cam 14 with a serrated surface 15 adapted to be normally held against the T-head 1.0 by a spring 16. Said cam is provided with an outer operating lever 17, and an arm 18 which extends into the path of the movable jaw 8 to limit its outer movement and prevent the same from becoming detached from the shank. The jaw 8inay be moved inwardly to engage a nut and will freely slide over the serrated surface 15 of the cam 14 pressing the same out of its path against the tension of the spring 16, but the serrated cam will bind against the T-head 10 to prevent outer movement thereof, said spring forcing the cam action thereof. An outer movement of the lever 17 will release the cam from the T- head and permit movement of the jaw 8 in an outward direction.
Having now described my invention, that which I claim to be new and desire to procure by Letters Patent is 1. In a wrench, a shank having a groove and a fixed jaw, a sliding jaw having a tongue operating in the groove and means for locking the sliding jaw against movement, 1n one direction, said means consisting of a cam, said tongue being in the form of a T-rail, said groove conforming thereto, and extending into the shank to form a pocket for said cam, said cam being spring pressed, a lever controlling the cam, means for limit ng the movement of the sliding jaw, said sliding jaw operating on an inclined plane, said tongue extending to form a shank for the sliding jaw, said last means being formed on said cam.
2. In a wrench, a shank having a grooi e and a fixed jaw, a sliding jaw having a tongue operating in the groove and means for locking the sliding jaw against movement, in one direction, said means consisting of a cam, said tongue being in the form of a T-rail, said groove conforming thereto, and extending into the shank to form a pocket for said cam, said cam being spring pressed, a lever controlling the cam, means for limiting the movement of the sliding jaw, said sliding jaw operating on an inclined plane, said tongue extending to form a shank for the sliding jaw, said last means being formed on said cam, and consisting of an arm extending therefrom.
3. In a wrenoh,.a shank having a groove and a fixed jaw, a sliding jaw having a tongue operating in the groove and means for locking the sliding jaw against movement, in one direction, said means consisting of a cam, said tongue being in the form of a T-rail, said groove conforming thereto, and extending into the shank to form a pocket forsaid cam, said cam being spring pressed, a lever controlling the cam, means for limiting the movement of the sliding jaw, said sliding jaw operating on an inclined plane, said tongue extending to form a shank for the sliding jaw, said last means being formed on said cam, and consisting of an arm extending therefrom, said groove extending through said fixed jaw.
4. In a wrench, a shank having a groove and a fixed jaw, a sliding jaw having a tongue operating in the groove and means for locking the sliding jaw against movement, in one direction, said means consisting of a cam, said tongue being in the form of a T-rail, said groove conforming thereto, and extending into the shank to form a pocket for said cam, said cam being spring pressed, a lever controlling the cam, means for limiting the movement of the sliding jaw, said sliding jaw operating on an inclined plane, said tongue extending to form' a shank for the sliding jaw. said last means being formed on said cam. and consisting of an arm extending therefrom, said groove extending through said fixed jaw, said last shank forming a nut engaging surface.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
