FREDRIO O. GRAF, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA..
KNOCKDOWN CABINET FOR AUTOMOBILES.
Application filed April 16,
To all whom it may concern:
lle it known that l, FRnDnrc O. GRAF, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the cit and county of @an Francisco, State of (Jalifornia, have made a new and useful inventionmto wit, improvement in Knockdown Cabinets for Automobiles; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, concise, and exact description of the same.
This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in automobile cabinets of the knock down type.
One of the objects of this invention is to produce a cabinet adapted to be carried on the running board of an automobile, and one which may be knocked down or taken apart to form other objects.
Another object of this invention is to produce a cabinet whichv may be used by camping parties to serve as a table and benches and when folded may be used as a storage receptacle.
Another object is to produce a cabinet which may be manufactured from any light material, and one which may be fashioned without the employment of expensive special machinery.
In this specification and the annexed drawings, the invention is illustrated in the form considered to be the best, but it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to such form, because it may be embodied in other forms, and it isalso to be understood that in and by the claims following the description, it is desired to cover the invention in whatsoever form it may be embodied.
ln the drawings forming a part of this specification,
Figure l is a cross section of Fig. 2 taken on the line X X showing the parts within the cabinet.
Fig. 2 is an end view of my cabinet.
Fig. 3 is a top plan view thereof partly broken away.
Fig. 4l is a sectional detail view taken on the line l4 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 discloses my cabinet in knocked. down position and forming a table and two benches.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of an automobile with my cabinet attached to one of the running boards thereof.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, the numeral 5 designates the cabinet as a Specification of Letters Patent.

whole. This cabinet is rectangular in shape and resembles a box structure having a top 6 and a bottom 7. lligidly attached to the top section G are two side members 8 and 9. Attached to the bottom member 7 are two side members 10 and 11. The top member o is formed of two sections and hinged at 12, as shown in Fig. 3. riChe top 6 and side supports S and 9 or bottoms T and supports 10 and 11 form individual benches.
lf desired, a fabric may be fastened to the top members by a bead 13. This fabric may be of leather, oilcloth, or any suitable material which will prevent rain and dust entering at the point 14.
ln the side members 8 and 9, 10 and 11, l form grooves 15 and 16, which grooves accommodate the edges of the front and back of the cabinet 17 and 18. These last mentioned members have legs 19 and 20 attached thereto through braces 21 and 22 hinged to said members 17 and 18. The front 17 and legs 19 or back 18 and legs 2O forni individual tables when in operative position.
To keep the parts assembled, I provide a strap 23 passing through retainers 24C suitably placed upon the sides 8 and 9, 10 and 11. rlhe ends of this strap are attached to the running board in any suitable manner.
The sides of the cabinet are provided with cleats 25 and 26, which cleats carry shelves 27 and 28.
Assuming that the cabinet is attached to the running board, and it is desired to dissemble the Same, the forward part of the top G is raised, as shown in Fig. el. he member 18 may then be withdrawn the same is free to slide in the grooves 15.
Upon the withdrawal, the legs carried thereon may be unfolded by swinging the brace members 2l and 22 to a vertical position, as shown in Fig. Suitable fasteners, such as hooks 29, are provided to retain these legs in extended position. Thus far it will be seen that the cabinet front has been removed. This gives access to the shelves 27 and 28 which be employed for the transport of commodities such as luggage, food and utensils. rlhe shelf 2T is now removed and the top 6 with its depending members 8 and 9 is removed which form a bench, as indicated at 30 in Fig. The rear of the cabinet is then removed which forms the remaining table, also shown in Fig. 5. The bottom 7 and members 1i) maa and il are then turned over and set upon the ground, as shown at Sl in Fig. 5, and this forms the other bench.
If desired, the shelves 27 and 28 may be rigidly attached to the cleats 25 and 26. This will be an additional brace for the benches When they are being used as seats.
In Fig. 3 I have shown a receptacle 82 adapted to contain ice for preserving the contents of the cabinet.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as nciv and desire to secure by Iletters Patent is l. A. device of the character described comprising individual, front and back sections; a bottom section having upstanding end members and grooved on the inner sides thereof to receive said front and back sections; a top section with depending side members thereon and grooved on the inner faces thereof, adapted to slidably engage the front and back sections.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination of a top section having depending side members thereon; a bottom section having upwardly extending side sections attached thereto; continuous grooves in said side sections and said top and bottom sections and individual front and back sections adapted to rest Within said continuous grooves.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination of a top section having depending side members thereon; a bottom section having side sections attached thereto; continuous grooves in said side sections and said top and bottom sections; individual front and back sections adapted to rest within said continuous grooves, and said top section having ahinged portion overlying said front section.
a. In a device of the character described, the combination of tvvo individual bench seats with supporting members thereon; grooves in the inner sides of said supporting members and under faces of said bench seats; tvvo individual table sections adapted to slidably lit Within said grooves, said individual bench seats and supporting members forming respectively the top, bottom and sides of a boX When assembled and the table sections forming a front and back thereto.
5. A knock down cabinet consisting of tivo individual tables forming the front and back thereof; two individual bench seats with supporting members thereon having` grooves on the inner sides of each of the supporting members and luider faces of each of the bench seats, to receive said front and back sections and hold the same slidable therein, said bench seats and supporting members forming respectively the top, bottom and sides of the cabinet.
6. A knock down cabinet consisting of tivo individual bench members each comprising a seat and a pair of supports and forming respectively the top, bottom and sides of a cabinet; continuous grooves on the inner sides of the supporting members and under faces of the bench members of each of the individual benches table members adapt ed to slidably lit within said grooves and forming a front and back on said cabinet and a hinged portion on one of said bench seat members adapted to overlie and engage the edge of one of the table members.
7 In a device of the character described, the combination of a top section, depending side members thereon, a bottom section, side sections attached thereto, continuous grooves in said side sections and said top and bottom sections, a front and back section adapted to rest Within said continuous grooves, said top section having a hinged portion overlying said front section, and folding legs carried by said front and back section.
8. In a device of the character described, the combination of a top section having depending side members thereon; a bottom section having side sections attached thereto, means on the inner faces of the top and bottom sections for receiving front and back sections, said top section having a hinged portion overlying said front section and folding supporting members carried by the front and back sections.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand at San Francisco, California, this 4th day of April, 1919.
FREDRIG O. GRAF.
