l. SMlTH.
Lime Bins.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JosEPH sMITH, or EAIETON, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN LlMEvv-BINS. Y.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 133,729, dated December 10, 1872.
To all whom it may concern;
c Be it known that I, J osEPH SMITH, of
ton, Cumberland county, State of New Jersey,
have invented certain Improvements in Lime- Bins, of which the following is a specification: The object of my invention is to preserve e unslacked lime and exclude it from the injurious effect of moisture and dampness. Several improvements have been made to effect this object, but without success.
A double-portioned bin with double doors has beenresorted to, in which the space between the partitions is filled with slacked lime, plaster of Paris, or other absorbents, intended to absorb the moisture of the atmosphere, which is only effective until it becomes saturated with'moisture, after which it has an in- Jurious effect on the lime near the partitions, dampening `and slaking it to a certain extent.
In order to overcome these objections I have constructed a bin which is the subject of the y present specification, of .which the accompae nying drawing forms a part.
Figure I is a front view of a double lime-bin embracing my invention. Fig. II is a vertical cut section ofthe same. v
AAare boards placed closely together, forming a box of any desirable size and form, and nailed or fastened to the timbers B B, which form `the bottom timbers; G C, the side timbers; and D D, the top timbers. These bottom, side,and top timbers are securely fastened to each other. From the center of the bottom timbers B B to the center of the top timbers D D are fastened the partition-timbers E, to which the boards F F are laid closely together, nailed or fastened, forming a solid vertical longitudinal partition in the center, thus dividing the bin into two separate compartments, G and H. Between the bottom timbersB B and the boards A A islaid a piece of oil-cloth, felt; tarred paper, or canvas, L, which is nailed or fastened to the boards A A. Also on the sides, top, and partition-wall inside similar material, L, is fastened. In front of the compartments, and giving ingress to the same, are two openings, which are closed, when so desired, by aid of the boards I 1, which slide in thegrooves et a in the side of the timbers C G and partition-timber E. Two pieces of the same material which covers the inside and bottom of the bin are nailed or fastened by one end to the bottoml and stretched up to the top, inside of the openings, and fastened to the' top timbers D, together with the last top boards I I', by aid of the screws b b.
By this construction a simple and cheap bin is produced, which will effectually exclude dampness or moisture and preserve the lime effeetually, and prevents it from becoming slaked. Having thus fully described my invention I desire to claim- The coverings L, in combination with the timbers B, C, D, and E, boards A, F, and I, grooves a a, and screws b b, substantially as and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
