Specifiostion of Letters Patent. Patented Sept. 10, 1912- Application filed November 18, 1911. Serial in. 659,955.;
T 0 all whom) it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUST Wns'i'ENDoRr, j:
a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county ofScott and State of This invention relates to silos and building blocks-therefor, and has for its object the production ofmeans for facilitating the s. in an assembled position.
production (if an eifioient silo or otherbuildin With these and other objects in View this] invention consists of certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
'- In the drawings: Fl re 1 is e vertical section taken through t e silo. Fig. 2 is a.

Fig. 8 is a detail perspective partly in sec-'f tion of a modlfied'form of block which may be used in connectionwith the construction;
a modified form of one of the end locks for of the silo. Fig. 9 is a detail pers ective of the door sill before the opening for the rein- 1 forcing wire has been cut therethrou h. Fig. ,10 is a detail perspective view 0 a' portion of the block disclosed Fig. 9
showing the same cut away to permit the reinforcin rod to pass therethrou h. a
The s o is constructed of a p urality of hollow blocks 1 which are formed from vit in the groove 2. The rods 4 are in Fig. 3 of the drawing. The ends. of these tie wires or rods 3 engage vertically within the door jamb or hollow bloc containing the same and extend centrally thereof and by having these blocks filled with cement or other similar material the rod will.
. be greatly reinforced by being held within Another object of this invention is the door jamb for e a practically solid body; The side blocks constituting the door jamb are divided into two compartments, the rear compartmentof which receives the reinforcing rod l above 'mentioned. The base side block 5 is provided with an oil-set end (Shaving an opening 7 formed therein. This opening 7 recelves the ends of the sill block 8 which. block is provided with openings 9 upon the upper surface thereof so as to allow the cement or othersimiler material to be poured therein for constituting a substantially solid body. Rods 10 extend longitudinally of the sill block 8, and have their respective ends secured to the respective vertically extending rods, therebyfirmly tying the base end blocks .5 in anassembled osition relative to the sill blocks. Two ofit ese rods 10 are preferably used; one of the same extending through "each of the compartments of the sill block. -()f course, the partitionllformed centrally of the sill block '8 is also rovidecl with an openinglQ for allowing t e cement or similarmateri'al to pass from one artition to theother. -When the'bas'e end 1 looks 5 are also filled with cement, it will be obvious that .a substantially integral structure will have been formed between thd end blocks and the sill block. The sides of the door jemb are formed of blocks '13 similar in construction to the base end blocks 5 and these blocks 13 are provided with vertically extending grooves 14 for allowing the blocks to be easil placed over the vertically extending ro 4thereby doin away with the necessity of placing each 0 the blocks over thg upper end of the vertically extending re s.
From the foregoing-description it will be 'bbVlQllE that-the entire construction of the silo will be firmly and rigidly tied together extending reinforcing rods 4 as clearly illus laced through the combined .use of the cement and tie rods above described.
Of course, the several blocks used in the construction of the silo may be formed in blocks comprise three compartments 16'the rear compartment of, which is preferably of" the same width as the building blocks out of. which the silo is constructed. {The other two compartments extend or projectinfront fot' the building as illustratedinFig. 1. The
top. of the front compartment- 16slopes from its outer edge toward the top ofthe outer compartment 16, thereby forming a gutter for allowing the drainage of the roof to be carried oii toxthe desired point. The. roof 1? is, of course, placed upon the cornice blocks "15. The cornice block is provided upon the top thereof with a beveled wall 18' which prevents the water draining from the .roof from falling over the side of thesilo. T hedrain pipe 19 passes through the central compartment of the cornice block and communicates with the upper surface thereof for carrying off the drainage from said.
cornice block.
From the foregoing description, it will be obvious that a very efficient cornice block has been produced which will prevent the, drainage from the roof from leaking over the side edges of the silo and will alsoreadily carry the water. from the roof to any de-' sired point. It will further be obvious upon giving Fig. 3' ofthe drawing careful consideration t-hatby having the tle blocks provided with-an offset portion as previously "described, a pocket has beenformed for the reception of the sill block 9, as well as the jusual jamb constructed for the door which may beused in connection therewith.
Having thus described the invention What is-clanned 1s:-
i 1. In a building composed of blocks 1n in courses, the courses being interrupted to form a doorway, reinforcing means for holding said blocks in alinement, vertically extending rods, hollow base side blocks posi- Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Comm tioned about the base of said vertically extending rods, said blocks being provided with an oft-set portion, an elongated hollow sill block having its ends seated in the OE- set portionof said base side blocks, and
means passing'through said hollow sill block and engaging said vertically extending rods for holding said rods together and also holding said side blocks in engagement with the ends of said sill block.
" 2, In a building composed of blocks laid in coui'ses, the courses being interrupted to form a doorway, reinforcing means for holding said blocks in alinement, vertically extending rods, a series of hollow side blocks positioned around said vertically extending rods and constituting a door jamb,
each of said blocks being provided with an 5 oifset portion for forming anabutting flange for the door adapted to be supported thereby, each of-said blocks being provided upon one side with a. vertically extending opening for facilitating the placing of said block around said vertically extending rods, a sill block positioned between two of the lower of said blocks, andmeans for tying said rods and blocks in engagement with said sill block.
8. .A door sill and amb compiiising a plurality .o'f side blocks having openings formed therein, vertically extending rods,
-. said side bloo s placed around said rods, a
hollow sill, block comprising an elongated body and having apertures formed therein, said hollow sill block being provided with a partition extending longitudinally thereof for constituting a plurality of compartments, said" partition having apertures formed therein, and saidsill bloc-k being adapted to receive cementfor forming a substantially solid body, and means passing through ,each
of said compartments formed in said sill block and engaging said vertically extend-- ing rods for tying said rods, said blocks,'and sill block together whereby a substantially solid structure may be produced.
In testimony whereof I -hereunto atlix' my signature in presence of two witnesses.
