TEMPORARY BINDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 20, 1920.
Application filed. July 17, 1919. Serial No. 311,468.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM FELDMANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Temporary Binders, of which the following is a specification. I
This invention relates to devices for temporarily binding loose sheets, and more particularly to devices of this kind having a base strip carrying. impaling pins for the sheets, and a follower carried by said nns. 1 The invention has for its object to provide a novel and improved means for locking the follower to the pins, and to this end it consists in a combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.
In order that the invention may be better understood, reference is had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of thls specification.
In the drawing,
. Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device- Fig. 2 is a sectional detail of one of the locking devices;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a support for an operating lever;
Fig. 4 is a plan view of a spring locking strip, and
5 is a perspective view of the operating lever.
Referring specifically to the drawing 5 denotes a base strip and 6 a follower between which the sheets or leaves are to be clamped. The base strip carries two upstanding pins 7 on which the sheets or leaves are impaled, and the follower is slidably mounted on these pins and carries means whereby it may be locked to the latter.
On top of the follower 6, adjacent to each pin 7 is riveted or otherwise secured a metal plate 8 having intermediate its ends an upward, arched bend 9. On one side of this bend, the plate has an elongated opening 10 through which the pin 7 passes, and in line with this opening, the follower has a hole 11 through which the pin passes. On the other side of the bend or arch 9, the plate 8 has upstanding marginal flanges 8 at the sides and end, and on top of the plate, at this end, and inside the flanges, is secured a spring locking strip 12. This strip is riveted at one end, as shown at 12 or otherwise fastened, to the plate 8, and its other end is free and has a notch 13 in which the pin 7 is adapted to seat. The locking strip is of such length that it extends with an inclination between the pin 7 and the plate 8, and it is resilient and has a normal tendency to swing downward toward said plate. It will therefore be evident that the notched free end of the strip 12 presses against the pin 7 and frictionally engages the same. A locking strip is provided for each pin 7, and the follower 6 is securely locked thereby to the pins.
To release the locking strips 12 from the pins 7 it is necessary to pry the former away from the latter, which is done by a rocking lever in the form of a link having one end 14 mounted under the arch 9 said end being provided with an outstanding lifting finger or lug 15 which is opposite a slot 15 in the plate 8 and continued through the arch. The strip 12 extends across the arch, and when the link is swung upwardly the finger 15 presses against the under side of the strip 12 and forces it upwardly clear of the pin 7, whereupon the follower is left free to slide on the pin.
The sides 16 of the link have a spread to seat alongside the plate 8 when the link is down and the finger 15 is retracted, and the free end 17 of the link is then opposite and outside the flanged end of the plate, said end of the link having a suificient upward bend to enable the operators finger to be inserted thereunder for swinging the link.
It will be noted that the slot l5 extends only partly through the arch 9 so that it may serve as a stop to limit the upward swing of the link. The finger 15 is parallel to the plane of the link, and when the finger is at the limit of its lifting stroke it is perpendicular to the follower 6, and as the strip 12 is now pressing against the top eX- tremity of the finger and holding the finger pressed against the inner end of the slot in the arch, the link is held in erect and release position by the strip, and it remains in this position until the link is again forced clown- Ward to withdraw the finger from the strip. The strips 12 are thus automatically locked in release position, leaving both hands of the operator free to remove the follower 6 from the pins 7 and to replace the same after the desired sheets or leaves have been placed on the pins. The device is therefore easily manipulated, and the sheets or leaves can be readily placed on the pins or removed therefrom.
The openings 10 are made in elongated form in order to adapt the plates 8 and the strips 12 without change to pins 70f greater diameter. While said openings would suit the purpose if made of even width, it is preferred that they be made with an outward taper, as shown, so as to avoid the removal of stock, and the consequent weakening of the plate 8, at a site Where only the minimum width of the opening is required.
I claim:
1. In a temporary binder, a base, an impaling pin rising from the base, a follower slidably mounted on the pin, a plate mounted on top of the follower and having an arched portion, a spring locking strip secured to the plate and engageable with the pin for locking the follower thereby, and a lever for disengaging the locking strip, said lever having a rotatable transverse portion journaled beneath the arch and provided with a lifting finger engageable with the locking strip, the aforesaid plate and the arch having a slot in which the finger works, 1
' slidably mounted on the pin, a platemounted on top of they follower and having an arched portion, a spring locking strip secured to the plate and engageable with the pin for locking the follower thereby, and a lever for disengaging the locking strip, said lever having a rotatable transverse portion journaled beneath the arch and provided with a lifting finger engageable with the locking strip, the aforesaid plate and the arch having a slot in which the finger works, one end of the slot operating as a stop to limit the swing of the finger in a direction to releasethe spring strip, and the finger at the limit of such swing being held pressed against said stop by the spring strip.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
WILLIAM FELDMANN.
