IMPROVEMENT IN EXPLOSIVE BULLETS-V Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 133,714, dated December 10 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL H. MEAD, Jr., of New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Explosive Bullet for Small Arms; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in casting or pressing an elongated bullet, A, with a cylindrical cavity, into which is pressed an ordinary self-igniting cartridge, 13, of any of the usual patterns, loaded, but without its bullet, so that its projecting rim -D will be just above the top of the bullet A; thus the whole will explode on being fired against any hard substance, as wood or bone.
I do not claim an explosive bullet as such; for bullets charged with fulminatin g compounds have been in use for many years, notably by General Jacobs in India, about 1850, and by Von Dreyse, the inventor of the Prussian needle-gun.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of a self-exploding metallic cartridge with a hollow bullet, which bullet may then be safely used as an explosive shell for the slaughter of wild animals orthe ignition of caissons, in muzzle-loadin g, breech loading, and repeating arms.
