1'}; all whom. it may come M2 Be it known that 1, Brorrann TELLER CRANE, J11, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in f iafetyfiprings for Berths, &c., of which the following is a specification.

My present invention relates to improvements in beds, couches and the like, and more particularly articles of this kind for use on ships, sleeping cars or other means of conveyance.

The principal objects of my present invention are to provide an improved form of ships berth; to provide means for raising one or both edges of a bed or couch; to provide improved means for varying the angle of one part of a bed or couch relatively to other parts thereof," to provide improved means for preventing the occupant of a ships berth falling out of the berth as the result of excessive rolling of the ship; to provide means for limiting the extent to which the occupant of the berth moves relatively to the berth under the rolling action of the ship, and generally, to improve the construction of beds, couches and the like.

In attaining these and other objects and advantages to be hereinafter disclosed, I have provided a construction one embodiment of which is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a plan View of a ships berth constructed in accordance with my present invention;

Fig. 4 is an end elevation showing the sides of the bed raised.

1n the form of construction shown in the drawings the mattress is made in three sections 11, 10 and 11 connected together at their upper edges only along the lines 12 so that the angular position of the outer sections can be readily changed, as illustrated in Fig. 1, without compressing one part of the mattress and stretching another art.

16 which carry the berth and the cross pieces 11 by means of double brackets 17.

The outer sections 11 of the mattress are mounted on narrow wire spring mattresses l8 entirely separate from the main wire spring mattress 13. These mattresses 18 are stretched between flanges 2? formed integrally with brackets 19 mounted at each end of the rods 20.

A will be apparent on inspection of Figs. 2, 3 and d of the drawings, the mattress and corresponding support portions 11 and 18 are relatively narrow as compared with the main body portions 10 and 13 respectively, being preferably merely of a width suflicient to provide lateral buffers to overcome any tendency imparted to the occupant of the bed to roll out of it in the case of rolling of the ship.

The brackets 17 and 19 have upwardly extending portions 21 and 22 pivotally connected at 23. This point 23 is preferably arranged, as shown, substantially coincident with the line of connection 12 between the outer and central sections 11 and 1.0 of the mattress so that the outer sections 11 of the mattress may be raised without undul'y compressing or stretching any part of such mattress.

When the mattress is extended flat as shown in Fig. 3 the lower part of the brackets 19 rest on the lower part of the brackets 17. When the outer sections are raised they are supported by means of links having segmental cut away portions at their free ends adapted to engage the rods 15 as indicated in Fig. 4. These links are preferably arranged near -the head of the berth so that they can be readily brought into and out of engagement with the rods 15 by the orcupant of the berth.

To aid in keeping the bed clothes in position when the sides of the bed are raised, cords 25 are provided connected at the foot of the berth to the cross piece 1%, and at their other ends to hooks 26 on the brackets 1f) at the head of the berth. The cords as so arranged will keep the clothes in position around the feet while not interfering with the movement of the arms.

The upraised sides of the berth not only prevent the occupant falling out as the result of excessive rolling of the ship, but also restrict the extent to which the occupant rolls on the berth as the ship itself rolls,

and thereby reduces the soreness and other disagreeable effects produced by such move-. ment.

Where the berth is arranged as a shelf against a wall only one side of the mattress need be raised to prevent the occupant of the berth falling out, but it is desirable even in such cases to have both sides of the berth constructed as shown to limit the rolling movement of the occupant as above described.

Having thus described my invention and illustrated its use, what I claim as. new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 2- 1. A bed of the character described comprising a supporting member, a supplemental supporting member adjacent and extending, longitudinally thereof, standards rising from each of said members and pivotally connected each to each, mattress sections for each member, said sections having their top surfaces lying in substantially the same plane as the pivotal point of said standards and means for retaining one of said members in a position inclined with respect to the other member.

2. A bed of the character described comprising a supporting member, a supplemental supporting member ad'acent and extending longitudinally thereof, standards rising bers in a position inclined with respect to I the other member, said means comprising a link carried by one member and cooperative with a stop onthe other member.

3. A device of the kind described comprising a mattress, means for raising one longitudinal edge of said mattress, and a cord adapted to hold the bed clothes in contact with said raised edge. said cord being arranged diagonally across such raised portion.

4. A device of the kind described comprising a mattress and a longitudinally disposed cord acting on the top of the mattress for holding the bed clothing in contact with the margin of the mattress, said cord being arranged diagonally across said margin.
