CHAIN-TIGHTENER.
Application filed September 22, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT C. CABLSEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pocatello, in the county of Bannock, State of Idaho, have invented new and useful Improvements in Chain-Tighteners, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention pertains to chain tighteners, and it contemplates the provision of a chain tightener that is simple and inexpensive in construction, reliable, well adapted to withstand the usages to which chain tighteners are ordinarily subjected, and calculated to lend itself to use in retaining coverings on ice-cream freezers and any other applications.
The chain tightener constructed in accordance with my invention is also, by reason of its characteristics, adapted to practically lock the covering on the receptacle and eliminate any accidental displacement of such during the storage or transportation, and with the foregoing in mind, the invention consists in the peculiar construction, novel combination and adaptation of parts as hereinafter described and explicitly claimed.
lVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a side view of an ice-cream freezer showing the chain tightener securing the cover thereon.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged edge view of the chain tightener;
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the elements shown in Fig. 2.

the-body portion 7 of which being curved on the arc of a circle and of substantially concavo-convexed form in cross section whereby when the device is applied for use, the concaved bottom conforms to the curvature of the container and snugly engages with the exterior circumference thereof. At one extremity of the body is provided an aperture 8 in which one end of the chain 9 is secured. 10, denoting the opposite end of the body 7 is of V-shaped form, presenting spaced parallel bearings 11, each provided with openings 12, alining one with the other and into which the opposite ends of the pivot 13 of the hand operated lever 14: are journaled. This lever 14 consists of a thickened head 15 and a reduced handle 16, the latter being provided with a concaved exterior portion 17, for a purpose to be hereinafter set forth.
Pivoted to the end of the base block 6 to which the chain 9 is fixedly secured, is a link 18 having pivoted in the free end thereof, a locking member 19, which in this particular instance constitutes a cam-lever. Centrally formed on the head 15 of the hand operated lever 14, is a laterally extending bill 20 to which the free end of the chain 9 connects.
In briefly describing the operation of the invention, and when it is desired to retain a covering over the contents of a container, the chain 9 is brought around the container, the hand-operating lever 14 swung at an angle with respect to the base block 6 and the free extremity of the chain 9 thence connected with the hook 20. After this operation, and that the chain may be drawn tight around the container, the hand-operated lever is thence swung on its pivot toward the convexed surface of the base block with the concaved face or surface of the latter, due to its specific formation, snugly contacting with the container, and the locking action of the tightener is obtained by thence rocking the link 18 in a direction toward the head 15 to permit the link to assume a right angular position with respect to the base block 6, and the head of the cam lever 19 is forced into engagement with the concavity 17 of the handle 16.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended operation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention as defined in the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention what Iclaimasnewis:k t a A chain tightener comprising a base block which is curved longitudinally and provided at one end with spaced flanges, a lever fulcrumed between the flanges and having a curved free end portion which is spaced msemc from the base block when the lever is at a closed position upon the block, a link pivoted to the block and adapted to swing along the, curved end portion of the lever and a cam member pivoted to the link and having a cam end portion adapted to, engage the curved end portion of the lever and flex the 20 lever when, the same is closed whereby the parts are locked in closed osition;
ALBERT GARLSEN.
