WILLIAM G. VASEY, OF LAKESIDE, OREGON.
BUTT-HOOK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 13, 1920.
Application filed August 18, 1919. Serial No. 318,215.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM G. VAsEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lakeside, in the county of Coos and State of Gre on, have invented a new and useful Butt-Ifook, of which the following is a specification.
The subject of this invention is a butt hook intended primarily for use in logging operations, though adapted for other uses.
The main object of the invention is the provision of a butt hook with means for locking the hook in place upon the article to which it is hooked.
Another object of the invention is the provision of easily released means for closing the opening to the hook.
The invention also contemplates generally improving the construction and enhancing the utility of butt hooks.
Vith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
A practical embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure l is a plan view of a hook constructed in accordance with the invention;
Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation, partly in section, of the same, the ring shown in unlocked position in dotted lines;
Fig. 3 is a cross section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawing by numerals of reference In carrying out the invention a hook is provided which is formed of a bar 1 which is apertured at one end to provide an attaching eye 2, and which is bent at the other end to fashion a hook 3.
The bar 1 is apertured to receive the attenuated portion 4 of a bolt, the extending end of the portion 4: being upset or headed, as indicated by the numeral 5, to lock the bolt in place in the bar. The other end of the bolt extends from the hook side of the bar and is of greater diameter than the portion 4 so that an annular shoulder is formed which seats against that face of the bar 1 opposite to the face contacted by the head 5.
This enlarged, extending portion of the bolt is bent to form a laterally extending portion 6 the end of which abuts a shoulder 7 formed at the apertured end of the bar 1. The end 6 has a boss 8 formed thereon which is adapted to take into a socket 9 formed in the bar 1 adjacent the shoulder 7. This firmly locks the bolt against pivotal movement.
The enlarged portion of the bolt is encircled by a ring 11 which has a close sliding fit on the bolt and which may be moved thereon to lie upon the bar 1 in the position shown in full lines in Fig. 2, for the purpose of effectually closing the entrance to the hook, or may be slid along the bolt to encircle the extending portion 6, assuming the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2. The ring 11 is provided with a transverse slot 12 which communicates with the central opening of the ring and which is adapted, when the ring is in one position, to receive a rib 10, formed longitudinally of the extending portion 6 of the bolt.
From this it will be seen that, when the ring is in position to bring its slot 12 out of register with the rib 10, the ring may not be slid along the bolt to encircle the extending portion 6 and must, therefore, remain in position to close the entrance to the hook 3.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and sought by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a hook having a shank and a shoulder formed thereon, of a bolt having a portion thereof extending.
through the shank, a ring positioned on the bolt, and said bolt having one of its ends extending at right angles to lock the ring to the shank, said bolt having an enlargement, and said ring having a cut out portion adapted to receive the enlargement of the bolt to permit the ring to be moved with relation to the hook.
2. The combination With a hook having a shank and a shoulder formed thereon, of a bolt extending through the shank and adapted to receive a ring, said bolt extending at an angle to lock the ring between the bolt and shoulder, said shoulder having an opening an enlargement formed on one end of the bolt and adapted to be positioned Within the opening to prevent displacement of the bolt, and means to permit movement of 10 the ring With relation to the hook.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto afiixedmy signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
lVILLIAM G. VASEY.
