HOOK.
Application led September 22, 1925. Serial No, 57,892.
The object of the present invention is to provide a hool-like device which may be used in hoisting and other similar' opera-v tions and will prevent members enga-ged therewith from slipping therefrom.
A very particular object of the invention is to provide a hook-like device of this nature which is exceedingly simple in its construction, strong, durable, reliable, and elficient in use, easy to' manipulate, and otherwise well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
W ith the above and numerous other lobjects in view as will `appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawing,
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of the device embodying the features of my inven tion,
Fig. 2 is an edge elevation thereof, and
Fig. 3 is a detail View partly in section taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that 1 designates a shank which has a hook extension 2 at one end while the other end thereof is reduced as at 3 has swivelly engaged thereon an eye 4. The reduc-ed portion 3 is 'threaded intermediate its ends as at 5 and below the threaded portion 5 is provided with a notch or recess 6.
A lool; arm 7 has a bifurcated end 8 adapted to straddle the reduced terminal 9 of the hooi; extension 2 and to be pierced by pivot pin 10 extending through said reduced terminal 9. As is shown in Fig. 3, the reduced end or terminal 9 vof the hook extension 2 is preferably separable therefrom being engaged rigidly in place by suitable fastening elements 11. The free end of the lock arm 7 is reducedas is indicated at 12 and said reduced end 12 is adapted to be received in the notch or recess 6 when the loclr arm is closed as is shown in Fig. 1. This reduced end 12 forms a shoulder 13- with the arm 7. The reduced por- 'tion 3 of the shank l formed therewith an annular shoulder 14 which has a portion cut away which will be supplied by the shoulder 18 when the arm 7 is in a closed position.
A sleeve has the upper interior portion thereof threaded as is indicated at 16. This sleeve is disposed about the reduced portion for engagement with the threades 5. By screwing downwardly on this sleeve 15 it will be seen that the sleeve may be extended over the reduced portion 12 of the arm 7 when in a closed position, thereby locking said arm in said closed position.
From the above detailed description, it will be seen that this hook-like device prevents objects such'as a sling vor the like which is engaged with the hook extension 2 from being accidentally or otherwise removed therefrom when thev lock arm is closed.. y
lt will also be seen that the sling will still be maintained in engagement with the device even though the arm 7 is open and in order to disengage the sling or the like it must be lifted over the end of said hook extension 2. Y
The construction, operation, utility, and advantages of this invention should now be clearly understood without a more detailed description thereof. It is apparent that changes in the details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed or sacrificing any of its a-dvantages.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is- A device of the class described including a shank having a hook extension at one end and having its other end reduced and provided with an intermediately threaded portion and a notch between the threaded portion and the shank proper, a shoulder ex-` tending partially about the juncture of the reduced end and the shank proper, a sleeve threadedly engaged with said threads and movable over the notch, and a lock arm piv- CHARLES B.
