ATTACHMENT FOR CRANE-ROCKS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known 'that we, EWING O. DAvIs, residing at Greensboro, in the county of Greene, and GEORGE HANDLEY, residing at Lock No. 4, in the county of l/Vashington, State of Pennsylvania, citizens of the United States of America, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Crane-Hooks, of which the following is a s ecification, reference being had therein to t e accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to attachments for crane hooks, and the primary object of the invention is, to provide a novel attachment for strengthening a crane hook and preventing objects suspended from said hook from becoming accidentally disengaged.
To this end, we have devised an attachment comprising a clamp, a pivoted hinged gate and a-latch. The clamp is carried by the breast of the hook and the gate is adapted to span the well of the hook, while the latch is adapted to engage in the hook point and retain the gate in a closed position.
The detail construction entering into our invention will be presently described and then specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is an elevation of the attachment as applied to a crane hook, Fig. 2 is a plan of the same, and I* ig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the attachment.
In the accompanying drawings, we have illustrated a swiveled crane hook having a breast portion 1, a well 2, and a hook point 3. The attachment is fastened to the breast of the hook, and is adapted to span the well 2 thereof, preventing objects suspended from said hook from becoming accidentally disengaged.
As heretofore stated, the attachment embodies a clamp, a gate and a latch. The clamp comprises a semi-cylindrical strap 4 having an apertured lug 5 and a rib 6, said rib frictionally engaging the breast of the hook and preventing the strap 4 from moving laterally thereon. Hinged to 'the ends of the strap, as at 7 are clamping members S and 9, the member 8 carrying a pivoted locking bolt 10 adapted to extend through the end of the member 9. A washer 11 and a nut 12 are employed to retain the Specification of Letters Patent.

Hinged to the apertured lug 5 by a pin 18 ismv the gate part of the attachment, said gate comprising a cylindrical body 14 having a threaded bore 15. the body 15 is the threaded shank 16 ol a head 17, said head being provided with a' vertical opening 18, to receive the hook point 3. The head 17 is adjustably con` nected to the body 14, whereby the attachment can be used in connection with hooks of various sizes, and in order to hold the head 17 fixed with relation to the body 14, we employ a set screw 19.
The latch of the attachment is arranged in the head 17, and the threaded shank 16 thereof. Said shank is provided with a bore 20 communicating with the opening 18 of the head through the medium of an opening 21. Mounted in the bore 20 and the opening 21 is a latch-bolt 22, and attached to the said latch-bolt, as at 23, is one end of a coil spring 24, said spring encircling the bolt within the bore 20. The opposite end of the spring 24 bears against the plug 25 detachably mounted in the end of the threaded shank 16.
The head 17 is provided with a slot 26 and extending downwardly through said slot is a finger-piece 27, said -linger-piece connected at its inner end to the latch-bolt 22. In order that the opening 26 will be normally closed to prevent dirt and water from entering the same, we provide the ringer-piece 27 with lateral extensions 28 adapted to normally close the opening 26.
The hook point 3 is provided with a recess 29 to receive the end of the latch-bolt 22, said latch-bolt retaining the gate in a closed position over the well 2 of the crane hook.
It is thought that the manner of manipulatin(r the ringer-piece 27, to move the spring held tlatch-bolt 22 rearwardly to release the headv 17 from locked engagement with the hook point 3 will be lully understood from the construction herein disclosed.
The attachment in its entirety is made of strong and durablevmetal and is a plicable to various types of crane and derric i hooks.
We reserve the right to make such structural changes as are permissible by the appended claims.
Having now described our invention what we claim as new, is
1. An attachment 'for crane hooks comprising a clamp, a gate body hinged to said clamp, said body having a threaded borev Adjustably mounted in formed therein, a hook point engaging head, a threaded shank carried by said head and adapted to engage in the bore of said body, a spring pressed latch-bolt mounted in said threaded shank, a inger-piece carried by said head for manipulating said latch-bolt, and means to X said threaded shank in said gate body.
2. The combination with a crane hook, of a clamp detachably connected to the breast of said hook, a gate hinged to said clamp for closing the well of said hook, said gate comprising a body, a head adjustably connected to said body and adapted to embrace the oint of said hook, a spring pressed latchbolt mounted in said head and adapted to engage in said hook point, and a iinger-piece carried by said head for moving said latchbolt out of engagement With said hook point.
3. An attachment for crane hooks, -comprising a clam adapted to be detachably secured to the reast of a crane hook, a gate body pivotally-connected to said clam and provided with a threaded bore, a hea having a shank on one end engaged With said bore and provided on its other end With an eye to receive the point of said hook, a spring-pressed latcholt in said head and shank normally projecting into the said eye to engage With the hook point, and a {ingerpiece for releasing said latch-bolt.
