DAVID S. CARTER, 0F DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO LARNEID, CARTER & COMPANY, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
OVERALLS-POCKET.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID S. CARTER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Overalls-Pockets, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to pockets especially adapted for use on overalls and consists in the provision of a pocket which in one position, performs the function of a swinging pocket and a flap for a second pocket and in another position performs the function of an inner pocket within the second pocket. Other objects of the invention reside in the novel arrangements and combinations of parts as more fully hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of an overall to which my invention is applied;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section thereof showing the swinging pocket in one position;
Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the swinging pocket in another position.
A represents a portion of an overall, B an ordinary pocket preferably formed by the patch C stitched at D to the overall, this pocket having the open upper end E.
For the purpose of obtaining a pocket which will retain any objects therein when the wearer stoops over, the swinging pocket F is provided. This pocket is formed of a single strip of cloth having the back portion G with the front portion H which terminates in the free upper edge I, the sides of the back and front portions being stitched to each other at J. The upper edge of the back portion G is stitched at K to the overall A above the upper end E of the ordinary pocket 13. With this construction the pocket F is free to swing so that as the wearer Specification of Letters Patent.

stoops over the pocket can remain in vertical position. This swinging pocket also performs the additional function of a flap for covering the open upper end of the ordinary pocket.
The swinging pocket F has an outer width slightly less than the inner width of the ordinary pocket B so that the same can be inserted into the ordinary pocket if it is desired not to be used as a swinging pocket. When inserted, the pocket F forms an inner pocket.
From the above description it is readily seen that I have provided a simple construction in which there is a swinging pocket that performs the additional function of a flap for an ordinary pocket in one position and in another position performs the function of an inner pocket and is not free to swing. It is evident that this construction is applicable to other garments than overalls.
WVhat I claim as my invention is:
1. In a garment, the combination with a stationary pocket having an open upper end, of a swinging pocket stitched'to said garment above said upper end and normally closing the same, said swinging pocket having an outer width slightly less than the inner width of said stationary pocket and insertible therewithin, the stitching for securing said swinging pocket to said garment running substantially the full width of said swinging pocket.
2. In a garment, the combination with a stationary pocket having an open upper end, of a swinging pocket stitched to said garment above said upper end and normally closing the same, said swinging pocket being insertible within said stationary pocket, the stitching for securing said swinging pocket to said garment running substantially the full width of said swinging pocket.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
DAVID S. CARTER.
