UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES O. BLOOMQUIST, 0F SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH.
WINDOW-STOP.
Application filed June 25, 1917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES 0. Bloom- QUIST, a citizen of the United States, residin the county of Salt Lake and State of Utah, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window-Stops, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to window sash stops and has for its object to provide an economical and efficient stop whereby the sliding of the sash of a window may be controlled and the distance which either sash may be moved can be limited as desired.
These objects I accomplish with the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which similar letters and numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several figures and as described in the specification forming a part of this application. and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings in which I have shown a substantial embodiment of my invention Figure 1 is a plan view of the device. Fig. 2 is a perspective of the device in position to stop the movement of a window sash when it is in place thereon. Fig. 3 is an ele- 'V'atlOl'l of the device on a portion of a window sash and with my device thereon in position to stop the passing of the sashes. Fig. 4; is an elevation of a portion of a window sash and with my device thereon in position to allow the sashes to pass. Fig. 5 is an elevation of a window with my device shown thereon and the lower sash raised and stopped thereby. Fig. 6 is an elevation of a window with my device thereon and showing the position when the sash is raised and not stopped by the device.
It is frequently desired to raise the lower sash of a window, or to lower the upper sash for ventilation and to secure the sash against being raised far enough to admit a person crawling through the window, and the object of the present invention is to provide such a stop which may be quickly secured on the sash and may be easily and quickly fastened into stopping position and which can not be released from without the building. The device consists of a common hinge A a portion of the knuckles of one leaf A of which has been cut away, as at 1, and also in which has been cut an elongated slot 2. On the other leaf A of the hinge is pivoted a dog 3 which has a knurled thumb piece 4 formed as a portion Specification of Letters Patent.

of the rivet and by which the said dog is operated. On the same leaf A of said hinge to which the dog is pivoted is attached a stop piece 5 cut at one end to conform to the shape of one edge of the said dog and conforming to the adjacent portion of the said hinge leaf A to give it greater thickness, at its other edges. The end portion of said dog through which the pivot is secured is shown at 6, and is cut eccentric with two involute curves, one of which limits the throw of the dog in one direction and the contact of the inner edge of face of the dog against the back face of the leaf A limits the throw of the dog in the other direction, as the slot 2 is so positioned in relation to said dog that the horizontal straight portion of said dog will not contact with the end of said slot before the jaw of the dog contacts with the back face of the leaf A. hen the dog is swung to locking engagement, as just set forth, one of the involute curved portions of the dog will frictionally engage with the inner curved wall provided by the depression 6 in the upper end of the plate 5 with sufficient friction as to effect in holding the dog in looking position, while again when the dog is swung to unlocking position the second involute curve on the end portion of the dog will contact with the opposite end wall of the curved depression 6 with sufficient friction as to hold the dog in such unlocked position without the requirement of other means. When the said hinge A has been fastened on the inner face of the upper sash of a window contiguous the corner of said sash and the leaf A of the hinge A, is turned toward the glass of the window, either sash of the window may be moved up or down without being engaged by the device, and then desiring to secure the sash against movement, other than as desired, the said leaf A is turned toward the front and at right angles to the other leaf A and the dog is made to engage within the said slot 2. In this position the said leaf A sticks out and prevents the two sashes from passing and the sash may he only shifted vertically as far as said hinge. That is, the upper sash may be lowered until the said stop piece 5 strikes the lower sash, or the lower sash may be raised until its upper edge strikes said stop piece 5. A slight turn of said dog 3 on its pivot, by turning the said thumb piece 4:,will release said dog from its engagement in the said slot 2 and leave the said hinge leaf A free to be turned back out of the path of the lower sash, and when this is done the sash of the window may be shifted Vertically as desired. The cutting away of a small portion of the said leaf A, as at 1, allows the dog to be pivoted contiguous the face of said leaf "A? and free to move on its pivot except as limited by the jaw of said dog 3 and the involute curved portion 6. For convenience in construction a loose pin hinge is used such, as a loose pin butt, the leaves of which. may be detached while constructing the device, and the portions of said leaf A may be cut away as at 1, and 2, while the dog 3 and stop piece 5 are fastened on the other leaf A When assembled as shown in Fig. 1 and secured on the upper sash of the window, the device is ready for use and the said leaf A may be turned to pass between the sashes as shown in Fig. 6 or to engage and itop the passing of the sashes as shown in Having thus described my invention I desire to secure by Letters Patent and claim A window stop comprising a loose pin hinged butt having a slot out in one leaf thereof and a portion of the knuckle of the said leaf cut away, a plate comprising a stop piece secured to the second leaf having its upper edge approximately in a line with the lower wall of the slot in the first mentioned leaf, said stop piece having a concaved depression at its upper end, a dog having a hook at one of its ends and its opposite end cut to provide two involute curves which is pivoted to the plate eccentrically with respect to the depressed portion in the stop piece, and whereby, when the leaves of the hinge are brought to right angular position with respect to each other the said dog may be turned to bring the hooked end thereof into the slot of the first mentioned leaf and the involute curve at one side of its inner end in frictional contact with one of the end walls of the curved depression in the stop plate, and said dog, when swung to an opposite or unlatching position designed to have the second involute curve on the end thereof engage with the opposite end of the curved depression in the stop plate to frictionally engage therewith and sustain the dog in unlatching position and an operating knob secured to the pivot of the dog.
In testimony whereof Ihave affixed my signature.
