Description

PATENT GFFICE.
FRANK L. JMISON, 0F PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
meer-CASTING DEVICE.
Specicatonof Letters Patent.
Patented Apr, 6, 1920.
Application led July 21, 1919. Serial 1\To.'312,191.
To all ywhom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, F RANK L. JAMIsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ingot- Casting Devices, of which the following is a specification.'
This invention relates to ingot-casting devices, and has for its object te provide a device of such class, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, with means whereby` the cost of the casting of ingots is reduced and further to effectivelyv prevent, when casting and hardening, the formation of the defect known as piping due to the shrinkage of the metal during the setting and hardening thereof. Y
Further objects of the invention are to provide an ingot-casting device for overcoming piping, which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable,y etli-y oient and convenient in its use, readily set up, and comparatively inexpensive.
Vtith the foregoing and other objects in view th invention consists of the novel construction and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to whichrorne within the scope of the claims hereunto appended,
v'In the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views: i
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of an ingot-casting device in accordance with this invention, also showing a portion of an ingot.
Fig. 2 is a top plan viewthereof.
Fig? 3, is a view similar to Fig. 2 with the hood removed.
Fig. 4 is a detail of the hood.
Referring to the drawings in detail an ingot-casting device -in accordance with this invention comprises a mold formed of a body portion and a head, the former is indicated at 1 and the latter at 2. The mold is formed of two sections which are detachably connected in any suitable manner, or if desiredfthe mold may beconstructed of one piece. The vmold may also be provided with any suitable means so it can be transported from point to point, by way of example a pair of trunnions or protuberances 2.
The head 2, forms a continuation of the body 1, is of lesslength than the latter and is tapering in contour. ril`he body 1 is rectangular in contour, although it is understood that it can be of any desired shape.
The walls of the body 1 are of greater thicknessthan the walls of the head 2, and the inner face of the walls of the latter forni a continuation of the walls of the body- 1. A continuous ledge 3 is formed at the upper end of the body 1 and at the point of jointure of the head 2 with the body l. The function of the ledge 3 will be presently referred to.
The ingot-casting device further includes a hood 4 which is adapted to be mounted on the head 2 to inclose the same and also to overlap the ledge 3. The hood 4L is rectangular in Contour and comprises four depending lwalls 5, each having at its lower end an outwardly inclined scalloped extension G, which when the hood 1 is mounted in position, overlap the ledge 3. See Fig. 1. The scalloped extensions provide air inlet openings 7. The hood et further includes a top 8, from which depend the walls 5, and said top 8, is formed with a central opening 8, which is vclosed by a removable shouldered glug 9, formed with `a pair of vents 10. T e top 8 is also formed with an opening 11 which not only acts as a vent but will also permit of one seeing the extent of metal poured into the mold and also when the metal is setting.
The plug 9, has pivotally connected to its upper' face a valve 12, for opening and closing the vent openings 10. The valve 12, has a handle 13 so it can be conveniently shifted when desired.
Arranged within the hood 1, at opposite I corners thereof, are spacing members 14 which engage two corners of the head 2 for spacing the hood relatively to the head.
The shape of the hood 4 relatively to the shape of the head 2 provides a heating chamber 15, whereby the head 2 andthe contents thereof and the upper portion of the ingot 16 within the mold may be heated to preventI the premature solidification of the said upper portion of the ingot 16. The heat for the chamber 15 is derived from a series of '2 i f l i 1,336,234
burners 17, mounted on the ledge 3, the latter forminga support for the said burners 17.
The burners 17 surround the lower end of the head 2 and are overlapped by the extensions 6. Leading to the burners 1T is a supply pipe 18 from a gas supply, which is provided with the valve 19 and air supply pipe 20. c
The construction and operation of the ingot-casting device are such as to provide ericient means whereby the upper end of the ingot is maintained hot, so that 4when set the top thereofl will not pipe but be formed with a slight depression similar to that shown at 21.
lV hat I claim 1s':- 1. An ingot-casting devlce comprising a mold formed of a body portion and a head,
said head being of a different contour than thecontour of said body and smaller than the latter, burners surrounding the lower portion of the head, a hood'inclosing the head and overlapping the lburners and provided with air inlets, said hood of a different contour from that of the head thereby formi ing a heating chamber surrounding the head, and said hood having its top provided with vent openings.
2. An ingot-casting device comprising a mold formed of a body portion and a head, said head inset with respect to the top oi' said body thereby forming the latter with a ledge at its top, said head being tapering in contour, a hood mounted on the head and spaced from the sides of the latter to form' having an opening in its top, a removable plug for closing said opening, said plug having vent openings, means for opening and closing said vent openings, and burners supported by said body and surrounding the lower portion ofthe head and overlapped by the hood.
1.15m ingot-casting device comprising a mold formed of a body and a tapering head, a hood inclosing and spaced from the head forming a heating chamber surrounding the head, burners surrounding' the lower portion of the head at the bottom of said chamber, said hood having an,opening, and a vent plug mounted in said opening.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
FRANK L. J AMISON.
