LANTERN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
' Patented Apr. 6,1920.
Application filed July 19, 1919. Serial No. 312,015.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOSEPH N. KLEMA, a citizen of the United. States, residing at Austin, in the county of-Mower and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lanterns, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in lanterns and is an improvement on the construction embodied in my copending application Serial No. 263,336, and it is an object of the invention to provide novel and improved means whereby a color screen may be readily and conveniently sup ported with respect to the burner of the lamp and whereby the color screen may be raised or lowered as the occasions of practice may require.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved lantern whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary view partly in section and partly in elevation illustrating a screen holder constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my inventiom'and in applied position.
Fig. 2 is a view in perspective of my improved holder as herein disclosed with the coacting screen being indicated by dotted lines.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view in side elevation of the upper portion of my improved holder, the coacting portion of the screen being indicated by dotted lines.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings C denotes a casing having its top or upper face open and arranged within said casing at substantially the axial center thereof is the well W. Coacting with the well W in a conventional manner is the burner B. The side wall of the casing C is provided with a vertically disposed slot 1 extending substantially the entire length thereof and through which extends an outstanding arm 2 extending outwardly from the lower end portion of the screen holder H. As herein embodied the screen holder H comprises an elongated fiat strip preferably of metal and with the lower end portion of which the arm 2 is integrally formed. The arm 2 is substantially at right angles tothe strip 3 with its side or flat faces vertically disposed.
,The arm 2 inwardly of its outer end is provided with the oppositely directed wings 4: which overlie the outer and inner faces of the sidewall of the casing C so that the arm 2 is conveniently supported for sliding movement along the slot 1 and is maintained substantially in a horizontal position orin a position at right angles to the side wall of the casing C. In the present embodiment of my invention each of the Wings 4: is preferably separable from the arm 2 but'is secured thereto through the medium of the rivets 5 or the like.
The lower end portion of the strip or member 3 is provided with the oppositely directed arcuate arms 6. Each of the arms 6 is relatively short and is provided at its outer extremity with the upwardly facing hoolrmember 7 in which is adapted to seat the lower end portion of the color screen S. Each of the hook members 7 preferably comprises a flat arm a integrally connected with the lower marginal portion of an arm 6 and depending therefrom with the outer or free end portion 6 thereof bent inwardly and upwardly.
Pivotally engaged with the upper end portion of the strip or member 3 inwardly thereof and for swinging movement about sub stantially a horizontal axis is a clip 8. The working end portion of the clip 8 is outwardly offset so that the same may be readily engaged over the upper portion of the screen S so that said screen will be effectively held by the holder H. To further facilitate the maintenance of the screen S in applied position I find it of advantage to employ the spring 9 for frictional contact with the outer'surface of the screen S. As herein disclosed the spring 9 is integrally formed with a washer 10 mounted upon the pivot 11 between the strip or member 3 and the clip 8.
It is also preferred that the arm 2 hereinbefore referred to be produced by initially twisting the lower end portion of the strip or member 3 a one-quarter turn and.
then bending such twisted portion substantially at right angles to the strip or member 3.
The operation of my improved holder is substantially the same as set forth with respect to the holder as embodied in my 00- pending application Serial No. 263,336 and for this reason a detailed statement of the operation is believed unnecessary.
In, all instances it is not necessary that the spring 9 be employed because by bending outwardly the upper portion of the strip 3, the clip 8 can be caused to have the requisite contact with the upper portion of the screen S. For this reason it is to be understood that the strip 3 is of a metal or other material which is capable of being bent or sprung.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a lantern constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated and it will also be obvious that my invention 1s susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed. 7
I claim: r
1. In a lantern, the combination with a casing provided with a slot in the side wall thereof, a holder fora color screen comprising an elongated and vertically disposed screen supporting member, an outstanding arm carried by the lower end portion of the member and extending through the slot of the casing, oppositely directed arms carried by the lower portion of the screen supporting member, the outer portions of each of said arms being provided with upwardly facing hook members, and a clip carried by the upper portion of the said arms being provided with upwardly facing hook members, a pivoted clip carried'by the upper portion of the member, and a spring carried by the upper portion of the member between the member and the clip.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses. JOSEPH N. KLEMA. V lVitnesses LAURENCE E. BEERS, H. B. HINOKLEY.
