WALKING DLL.

INVENToR Hernzazzfz Tm Mr? BY wf! M A ATTORNEY HERMANN TRABERT, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
WALKING DOLL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. e, 192e.
Application filed April 22, 1919. Serial No. 291,913.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, HERMANN TRABERT, a citizen of Germany, residing at Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Walking Dolls, of which the following is a specification. p
lThis -invention relates to improvements 1n doll structures, and has as its special object the provision of means whereby adoll or like automaton may simulate the appearance of walking, the lower limbs being movable, one in advance of the other, when the doll is moved over a relatively level surface so that the feet contact therewith.
Y further object is to provide means whereby a doll may have the lower limbs extended horizontally, as in the position of sitting, when` ydesired in addition to the walking effect.
These and other like objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a miniature doll made in accordance with the invention, and indicating the application of the invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary side elevational view showing the lower portion of the doll, parts being broken away in order to disclose the construction.
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional View taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a side elevational view showing the limbs folded in a sitting position, and
Fig. 5 is a side elevational view of the same, the lower limbs being extended horizontally.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 10 indicates the body of the doll, surmounted by the head 1l, and provided with a pair of arms 12 as is usual.
Engaged with the lower portion of the body element 10 is a cylindrical casing 14, cut away at the lower front portion 15, and having engaged at the bottom of the caslng a block 16, suited to the cut-away ortlon, and secured in position by. screws 1 passing through the sides of the casing at the front and back.
The central raised portion 18 of the block carries a spindle 20, the same extending outward at both ends, on which'is pivotally secured elements 22 and 22 representing respectively the right and left lower limbs of the doll, these limbs being secured by the upset heads 19 of the spindle.
The top of the block 18 is bifurcated, forming a central recess 24, and operable 'thereinI is a rod 25, rigidly engaged at the center of the transverse pin 20, the rod eX- tending to some distance beyond the block 18, and is engageable betweeny the forked ends 26, of a pair of spring arms 27, integrally joined by a loop 28, at their outer ends, and passing through the loop 28 is the head 29 of a bolt `30, the same passing through the upper portion of the block 18 and held rigidly in position by the nut 31, the arrangement being such that the outturned elements of the forks 26 receive and resiliently clamp the rod 25' when entered therein.
Pivoted on the rod 25 is an elongated plate 33, having slots 34 and 34 formed in its opposite ends, the same being receptive of pins 36 and 36 rigidly set in the outer end of the limb elements 22 and 22. Thus when one of the lower limbs, as 22', is placed upon a surface and the doll body 10 advanced, the pin 36 at its upper end, beyond axis 20, is moved rearwardly, and, due to its engagement in the slot 34 causes the plate 33 to rotate upon the rod 25 and thus transmit motion in an opposite direction to the pin 36, causing a limb 22 to be advanced, the movementsr being' alternate, and in a manner quite similar to that of a person walking.
In order to permit the limbs to be extended at right angles to the body 10, they are move-d in lateral registration and the rod 25 freed from the spring forks 26, the sitting position being shown in Figs. 4 and 5 of the drawings. v
From the foregoing it will be observed that the doll may be moved in a manner simulative to walking, and that both of the lower limbs may be folded at right angles to the body so that the doll may assume a sitting posture, all of the several operations being readily performed without changes or manipulation of the doll other than to manually maneuver the lower limbs in the manner explained.
From the foregoing it will be seen that an attractive and novelly operated form of doll structure has been disclosed and that the same is capable of being operated by children without diHiculty.
Having thus described my invention what .l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'- l. In a walking doll, the combination with a body, a casing extended therebelow, and a block secured in said casing, said block having a central slotted recess, of a spindle passing through said block, a pair of elements simulating limbs pivoted on the extending ends of said spindle, a rod secured centrally on said spindle operable in the mentioned recess', projections ext-ending from said limb elements opposite to 'the main portions thereof, a plat-e pivoted on said rod, said plate having open slots at the ends thereo in which said projections are engageab-le, and spring forks secured to said block adapted to engage with said rod when in a vertical position, whereby said limbs are caused to extend downward from said body.
In a walking doll, the combination with a body, a casing secured therebelow, and a 'block rigidly engaged in the lower portion of said casing, said block having a central open recess in its upper portion, of a spindle passing through said block, elements simulating limbs pivoted on the extending endsoi said spindle, a rod secured centrally on said pin operable in the mentioned recess, an elongated transverse plate pivoted on said rod, said plate having` open slots at each end, pins extending upwardly from said limb element engaging in the Ymentioned slots whereby they are caused tomove in epposite directions, and resilient means for holding said rod when in a Vertical lposition, said means permitting` said limb elements to extend angularly to said body.
In testimony whereof l have aixed my signature.
