FAIL-LID.
Specification of Letters Patent. l Patentd llal. 30, 1920.
Application filed April 21, 1919. Serial No. 291,484.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, JOHN W. BENSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elkhorn, in the county of McDowell and State of West Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fail-Lids, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in receptacle lids and has for an object the provision of a lid which will permit of a circulation of air therethrough into the receptacle, but will prevent the passage of dirtl or dust.
Another Objectis tO provide a device of thischaracter which includes a dirt or dust collecting receptacle, which is so secured to the lid as to permit of its removal for the purpose of cleaning.
Another object of the invention is to provide a lid possessing the above characteristics7 which is simple and durable of construction and which may be manufactured at a low cost. Y
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear as the following description is read in connection with the-accompanying drawings.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a lid embodying the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a central sectional view of the same. Y
Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view vof a dirt collecting receptacle which is carried by the lid.
Referring to the drawings in detail, like characters of reference denote corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The lid, as illustrated in the 'accompanying drawings primarily f intended for use upon dinner pails or receptacles containing food, comprises a disk-like top 10, whose peripheryis surrounded by a flangell, adapted to take over the bucket or receptacle, as is readily understood. The disk 1() is provided with a number of perforations 12, near the center thereof, a relatively/large opening 13 being located directly in theV center of the disk.
Removably secured beneath the lid and in contacting engagement therewith, is a dust collecting receptacle, which includes a disk 14, which isprovided with a peripheral flange 15. This flange is also provided with perforations 16, while the disk 14 has formed therein a central perforation 17, so that when the dust collecting receptacle is in position, the openings 13 and 17 will register for the reception of an assembling screw 18. One end of this screw is provided with a knob 19 and the opposite end is adapted to receive a nut 20, so that the edge of the flange 15 of the dust collecting receptacle will engage the under surface Of the lid around the perforations 12. This permits of the passage of air through the lid, but prevents the passage of dirt or dust, so that proper ventilation is provided for the contents of the receptacle. A
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the rightk is herein reserved to make such changes as vproperly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed is: y
1. A lid for receptacles comprising a perforated flanged disk, a tray, a perforated flange surrounding the tray and means for securing the tray beneath the lid and below the perforations therein to provide a receptacle for dust or dirt passing through the perforations to permit a circulation of air through the lid.
2. A lid 'for receptacles comprising a perforated flanged disk, a tray, a perforated upwardly extending flange surrounding the tray and mea-ns Vfor removably securing the tray beneath the flanged disk toprovide a receptacle for dust or dirt and to permit a circulation of air through the lid.
3. A lid for receptacles comprising a perforated flanged disk, a tray, an upwardly eX-V tending flange Asurrounding the tray, said Afl ange having perforations near pits upper y edge and a connecting screw passmgthrough registering openings in the disk and tray for removably securing the latter to andspaced i below the lid to provide a receptacle for dust or dirt and permit a circulation of vair through the lid.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
JOHN WILLIAM BENSON.
