Description

PATENT BENJAMIN D. SANDERS, OF WELLSBURG, WEST VIRGINIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASH-EGARD BLANKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 133,545, dated December 3, 1872.
To all whom it may concern p Be it known that I, BENJAMIN D. SANDERS, of Wellsburg, in the county of Brooke and State of West Virginia, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Wash-Boards; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing mak ing a part of this specification, in which- Figure l represents a perspective view of a wash-board made in accordance with my improvement; and Fig. 2 is a sectional view of `the wash-plate through x, Fig. 1.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts in each.
In this washboard proper (which is made of a metallic sheet) a series of protuberances is swaged up or rolled up from the face of the sheet, such "protuberances being imperforate and conical in form.
To enableL others skilled in the art to make and use my improvement, I will proceed to describe its construction and mode of operation.
The framing b is made in any suitable form for vholding the wash-board sheet, blank, or plate a, which latter is inserted in or fastened to the frame in any suitable way. rlhis washboard plate a is made of and in it, by stamping between suitably-faced dies, or by rolling between properly-formed rolls, such asis usually employed for such purposes, a series of protuberances, c, are made projecting upwardly on the washing-face, in anydesired number and in any desired relative arrangement. These protuberances are made conical in form, as shown. Care should be taken that the devices which form the protuberances c should not perforate the metal or other material or so seriously impair its ber as to render it liable to break under such use as it is put to in a laundry.
The arrangement of these protuberances which I prefer is that shown in the drawing, where each protuberance c comes opposite to the space above or below, or both, which, in the row above or below, or both, intervenes between two protuberances in such row. Then, as the garments are rubbed up and down on the board, each part of their exposed face is operated on uniformly 5 the parts which pass between protuberances in one row are forced over them in the next, and so on alternately and continuously while the work is in progress. At the same time, as the bases of the protuberances c are in the common plane of the face of the plate a the water is free to pass in every direction, and drain oft' as the garments which are being washed approach a state of perfect cleanliness. Hence the articles which are being washed will not take up the dirty water previously given off.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As a new article of manufacture, washboard blank having conical uplifts or projections c raised from plain surfaces of sheet zinc by compression between suitably-formed dies or rolls, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof, I the said BENJAMIN D. SANDERS, have hereunto set my hand.
' BENJAMIN D. SANDERS.
