SECURING APPLIANCE FOR GAN-LIDS.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 30,1920..
Application filed July 20, 1917, Serial No.v 181,834. Renewed February 2, 1920. Serial No. 355,587.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, NEAL L. ROY, a citizen oi the United States, residing at Boltonville, in the county of @range and State of Ven mont, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Securing Appliances for Can-"Lids, and I do hereby declare the f ollowing to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to whichit appertains to make and use the same.
rThis invention relates to new and useful improvements in milk cans and more particularly to a securing appliance for milk can lids.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive spring latch which is conveniently arranged beneath and attached to the can lid so that it will automatically lockingly engage the can neck when the' cover is positioned thereon and which can be readily actuated by the lingers of a person to remove the lid.
A further object of the invention is to provide the can lid centrally with a depending sleeve adapted to be loosely positioned over the can neck so that the lid can be quickly and readily attached or detached to and from the can neck and at the same time eliminate the possibility of the lid sticking or freezing to the can neck as is usual in cold weather with milk cans of ordinary conn struction.
lVith these and other objects in view as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention comprises the various novel features ot' construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will he more fully described hereinafter and set forth with particularity in 'the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings,
Figure l, represents a perspective view oi my improved construction of milk can and can lid securing appliance.
Fig. 2, represents an inverted plan view or' the can lid.
Fig. 3, represents a perspective view of the upper portion of the milk can, and
Fig. 4, represents a vertical sectional view taken through the upper portion of the can with the can lid operatively attached thereto.
Similar characters of reference are used to denote corresponding parts throughout the accompanying drawings and the following description.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the reference numeral l indicates the body of the milk can and 2 the neck thereof which is connected to the' body by an inclined shoulder 3. The body 1 is provided with suitable handles 4.
A lid 5, in this instance, is dome shaped, and is provided centrally with a depending sleeve 6, which is of slightly larger diameter than that of the neck Q, and is adapted to be positioned over the neck so that the lid will rest upon the upper edge of the neck, and the lower circumferential edge of the sleeve will rest on the can shoulder 3 and thus form a seal between the can and the lid.
In order to lock the can lid to the can neck, I provide a spring latch which consists ot' a thin iiat hinge section 7 which is secured to the under surface of the lid through the medium of screws or other suitableV fastening means S, which extend through the cover and the opposite ends of the hinge section whereby the hinge section can be removed or detached from the cover if desired. p
The reference immoral 9 represents a fin ger bar which has its upper end hingedly connected to the upper end of the hinge section 7 as indicated by the numeral 10, while the lower end of the linger bar extends downwardly to a point below the lower circumferential edge of the can lid.
T his linger bar 9 carries a locking pin 11 which projects horizontally through an aperture l2 in the sleeve 6 and is adapted to lockingly engage within an annular groove 13 formed in the outer surface of the can neck. The locking pin l1 is provided with a lug lawhich is adapted to bear against the outer surface of the sleeve 6 and serves to limit the inward movement of the locking pin so that the latter may not enter the annular groove too deeply. As shown the edges of the annular groove are rounded so that when the locking pin is lockingly engaged within the groove, the can lid can be forcibly removedk by causing the inner end of the locking pin to ride out of the groove against the tension of the leaf spring 15 which is positioned between the hinge section 7 and the finger bar 9, the upper end of this spring being secured to the adjacent fastening element 8. If for any reason the locking pin should not ride out of the annular groove, the finger bar 9 may be grasped with the fingers at the same time that the lid is grasped by the hands, and
moved outwardly against the tension of the spring l5 so as to completely disengage the locking pin from the groove 13 thus permitting the lid to be quickly and readily removed from the can.
ln the present construction of milk cans, the sleeve indicated by the numeral G is eonstrueted to be inserted within the can neck and which in cold weather, frequently if not always expands and freezes within the can neck so as to render the removal of the can lid yery diflieult. This is entirely obviated by making the depending sleeve 6 slightly larger in diameter than that of the can neck.
l Claim:
The combination with a can neck having an annular groove formed in its outer eir-V eumferential surface, of a can lid having a eoneentrically arranged depending sleeve adapted to be positioned over said can neck, a hinge section detaohably connected to the two subscribing witnesses.
under surface of said lid, a depending finger bar having its upper end hingedly connected to the upper end of said hinge section, a leaf spring interposed between said hinge seetion and finger` bar and detaehably connected to said hinge section, a locking pin carried by said finger bar and slidably disposed through an aperture in said depending sleeve and adapted to engage said annular groove, and a lug earried by the locking pin adapted to engage the depending can lid' sleeve to limit its inward movement into saidannular groove'under the tension oi said spring. Y
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of NEAL L. ROY.
