To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, SAMUEL Time, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough of the Bronx, county of the Bronx, city and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful 1m rovements in Covers and Fastening leans Therefor, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in covers and fastening means therefor, and has for an object to provide means by which the cover may be automatically fastened as it is closed, and may be released with facility and preferably by the same hand gripping the handle of the cover, so that the other hand will be available for other purposes. The invention will be especially advantageous for ash cans, garbage receptacles and the like, where it is desired to have a tight closure and which closure will not be disturbed by turning over of the receptacle or by prowling cats or dogs. A further object of the invention is to provide such fastening means which will be very inexpensive and'simple tomanufacture, and may readily be attached to the types of re ce tacles at present in use.
ith these and other objects in view, an embodiment of my invention is shown in-the accompanying drawings and this embodiment will be hereinafter more fully described with reference thereto and the invention will be finally pointed out in the. claims.

Referring to the drawings, the can or other receptacle 10 is provided with a flanged cover 11, the upper edge of the recomprise .a back ndicate corceptacle being provided with a curled head or rim 12, while the lower edge of the flange of the cover is provided with a similar curled bead 0r rim 13, a handle 14 being provided centrally of the cover.
At diametrically opposite points of the flange of the cover there are provided vertical slots 15 and 16 extending to the head 13 and having their upper ends slightly above the lower extremity of the bead 12 of the receptacle in the engaged position of the cover. are of similar construction,'being oppositely arran ed as indicated in Fig. 2 by reason of this similarity. The said devices each ortion 17 of tapering sha e having side anges 18 and 19 bent at rig t angles thereto, the flange 18 terminating at the base of the portion 17 while the flange 19 is extended into a curved loop portion'20 bent about the bead 13 to constitute a hinge, the lower edge of the portion 17 being curved as at 21 in continuation of the curvature of the-loop, the said loop and the said lower edge of the portion 17 being substantially concentric to the bead 13. The back portion 17 is engaged in the slot of the cover and is limited in its swinging movement by engagement of the flanges 18 and 19'with the outer and inner surfaces of the said cover, a flat leaf spring 22 sebearing upon the inner surface of the cover constantly forcing the device toward its inwardly projected position, in which position it engages beneath the bead 12 of the receptacle when the cover is engaged there with. The spring 22 maybe secured in a 'slot 23 provided in the flange 19 or may be the fastening devices are forced outwardly by engagement with the bead 12, snap ing inwardly into place beneath the said ead as their upper ends pass below the same thereby fastening the-cover to the receptacle.

With my improvements, very simple means is provided by which the cover 0 a rectelptacle may be effectually fastened and at e same time will rrnit convenient disengagement of the same with one hand. . have illustrated and described a preferred'and satisfactory embodiment of my invention but it is obvious that changes may be made therein within the spirit and scope thereof as defined in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. The combination of a receptacle having an external projecting abutment in proximity to its upper open end, a cover for closing said receptacle having a dependent gange which shuts over said abutment, said an vertical slot extending upward from said head to a point opposite said abutment when the cover is closed, a pivotal oscillatory locking device swung on said bead, extending upward therefrom and adapted to oscillate on said bead and within sa d slot to engage said abutment, a spring operative to having a bead at its lower edge and a normally swing said locking device inward, and a releasing lever pivoted to said cover and extending downward between the inner and outer wings of said oscillatory locking device. In combination, a receptacle having a projecting abutment in proximity to its upper open end, a cover aving a flang extending below said abutment m the engaged positionof said cover with said receptacle, and a plurality of fastening means carried by said flange of said cover and ada ted to en beneath said abutment of sai receptac e to lock said cover to said receptacle, one of said fastening means comprising a swinging) member, and spring means normall rcing said swinging member inly beneath said abutment, and a lever disposed on said cover engaging said swingingmember and adapted to be operated to disen said member from said abutment to permrt removal of'said cover,
3.
